Republic Security Council

The Republic Security Council, also referred to as the Security Council, functioned as a committee within the Galactic Senate of the Galactic Republic. Its primary function was the defense of the Republic, and it wielded considerable influence in directing the war effort during the Clone Wars. Back in 22 BBY, Padmé Amidala, the Republic Senator representing Naboo, voiced her concern that the Security Council might favor a military response to the Cadesura disaster. Furthermore, the council advised the Supreme Chancellor and was authorized to trigger any of the Grand Army's 150 general orders.

Description

The Republic Security Council, alternatively known as the Security Council, was a standing committee within the Galactic Senate of the Galactic Republic with the core mission of safeguarding the Republic. While it initially provided recommendations to the Senate, it later shifted its focus to advising Supreme Chancellor Palpatine regarding the allocation of defenses and offensive strategies across various planets during the Clone Wars. The Security Council, in conjunction with the Supreme Chancellor, held the authority to enact any of the 150 general orders which every clone trooper within the Grand Army of the Republic had committed to memory.

History

The Senate's Security Council advised Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine (pictured far right).

Throughout the Clone Wars, spanning from 22 BBY to 19 BBY, the Security Council played a significant role in directing the Republic's wartime activities against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. In the year 22 BBY, in the aftermath of the Cadesura disaster that occurred on Cato Neimoidia, a planet within the Colonies region, Padmé Amidala, the Republic Senator representing Naboo, privately expressed to her husband, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, her suspicion that the Republic Security Council would advocate for a military solution to the crisis. Consequently, she emphasized the necessity of consulting with Chancellor Palpatine before any decisions were finalized. Skywalker smiled and interrupted her, and both agreed to move on from speaking of their responsibilities as they were on a social date. The implementation of the 150 general orders, which the Security Council possessed the power to activate, followed the Battle of Ringo Vinda in 19 BBY.

Behind the scenes

The initial mention of the Security Council in the current Star Wars canon appeared in the roleplaying sourcebook Rise of the Separatists from Fantasy Flight Games, released in 2019. Subsequently, the 2022 novel Brotherhood by Mike Chen formally identified it as the Republic Security Council. The Senate Security Council originally existed within the Star Wars Legends continuity, featuring in the novel True Colors by Karen Traviss, published in 2007 as part of the Republic Commando series.
