Ri'kan Kateen

Ri'kan Kateen, known within the Hidden Chain as Hibir of Heta Kol, was a male Twi'lek who possessed Force-sensitivity. During the era of the Old Republic, he resided at the Mek-Sha Home for Lost Children. Later, he embraced the Mandalorian way of life and became a member of the Hidden Chain.

Biography

Childhood

Prior to the third Galactic War, Ri'kan and his younger sister, Sa'har Kateen, became orphans while still quite young. The Mek-Sha Home for Lost Children, an orphanage situated on the space station Mek-Sha, served as their initial home. Subsequently, both began exhibiting signs of Force-sensitivity, although Ri'kan's connection to the Force was not as profound as his sister's. Eventually, Jedi Master Denolm Orr took Sa'har to be trained as a Jedi, but she had to leave Ri'kan behind because his Force connection was weaker.

Becoming a Mandalorian

However, Ri'kan eventually became a Mandalorian and joined the Hidden Chain well before the Third Galactic War began. Two years before the battle between the Hidden Chain and Shae Vizla's forces, the Sith Empire hired Ri'kan and his group on Belsavis for a clandestine assignment, where they encountered a team of Mandalorians led by Layla Ordo, who were hired by the Republic. Their confrontation resulted in casualties on both sides, including Layla's death and Ri'kan's escape. This failure of the Empire's mission led Ri'kan to personally blame Clan Ordo, primarily due to the loss of some of Heta's most valued members, which he considered more important than the Empire's objectives.

Reunion with Sa'har

Ri'kan is released from his cell by Sa'har.

During the Third Galactic War, Mandalorians captured Ri'kan, but his sister, Sa'har Kateen, unexpectedly rescued him. Ri'kan neither acknowledged her nor displayed any interest in her attempts to reconcile. He defensively asserted that she had abandoned him and that he no longer needed her. After Sa'har's final, desperate plea, Ri'kan relented, stating that while he didn't need her, he knew someone who could use her. He instructed her to follow him without questioning. Ri'kan then escorted Sa'har to the Hidden Chain's headquarters, where she reunited with Heta Kol and was introduced to his comrades.

During their "partnership" within the Hidden Chain, Sa'har revealed to Ri'kan that she possessed a Sith holocron belonging to Darth Nul and that Darth Malgus was seeking it. She also disclosed that the holocron held the key to a formidable weapon.

Showdown on Ruhnuk

Ri'kan brings Sa'har to meet with Heta Kol.

On Ruhnuk, Ri'kan encountered a Clan Varad patrol guarding a signal tower and reprimanded them, stating that their failure to report in would reflect poorly on Clan Varad. When one arrogantly declared that they answered to the Field Marshal rather than Ri'kan, Ri'kan punched him and instructed the other to educate his fellow recruit before departing. Later, Ri'kan was engaged in a holocall with Sa'har, which was abruptly terminated. Ri'kan reestablished contact, requesting Sa'har to bring the holocron back with her, but the call was once again interrupted when Shae shot it.

Ri'kan stood alongside Heta Kol and several Hidden Chain members as they confronted the Alliance Commander, who had been immobilized by four sonic disruptors courtesy of Bask Sunn. Ri'kan also drew his blade when Shae angrily confronted Heta, only to stop at Heta's command. After Heta and Shae proceeded to the arena, Ri'kan knocked out the Commander and instructed the Dar'manda to deal with them, with any repercussions to be blamed on the Dar'manda. In the arena, Ri'kan listened to Heta's speech about what distinguished them from other Mandalorians. Upon Shae's arrival to begin the duel, Ri'kan softly struck his fist against his chest, followed by the rest of the Hidden Chain.

Following the duel, Ri'kan participated in the conflict between the Hidden Chain and Shae's forces, where he eliminated several Mandalorians. Recognizing Rass Ordo, he targeted him, only to be repelled by Rass's blaster rifle. When the rifle ran out of ammunition, Ri'kan seized the opportunity to wound Rass with his large vibrosword. As he moved in to finish off Rass, the Alliance Commander attacked Ri'kan relentlessly, only to be saved by Sa'har, who used the Force to push the Commander away. The two then used rocket boosts to reach an Eternal Empire shuttle, where they awaited Heta before departing Ruhnuk with their fleet.

Upon exiting hyperspace, Ri'kan maintained his belief in Heta's cause, reminding her that the Hidden Chain's cause was just, regardless of the outcome, and that Heta would guide them to the end. He then informed Heta about a weapon Sa'har had mentioned, prompting Sa'har to intervene. Ri'kan emotionally blackmailed her, reminding her of her promise to help them. When Heta moved to speak with Sa'har, he added that even Malgus coveted the weapon, further emphasizing its significance. He was visibly angered that Heta confided in Sa'har in secret while being ordered not to disturb them.

Heta's New Plan

Ri'kan and Sa'har in the aftermath of Ruhnuk

Following Ruhnuk, Ri'kan was engrossed in a holomap when Sa'har entered and levitated a holopad with the Force, irritating Ri'kan, who demanded she stop. Sa'har encouraged Ri'kan to try it, asserting that he had the power to do so. Ri'kan replied that it wasn't what "her" Jedi friend had said, to which Sa'har responded that she was the one telling him he could do it. Ri'kan attempted to use the Force but failed, growing frustrated. He pulled out a dagger and destroyed the holopad with it. He then told Sa'har that this was the same dagger Heta used to liberate him as a slave and he has his own future such as becoming a Mandalorian was the greatest thing to ever happen to him while, unbeknownst to both of them, Ri'kan was subtly moving the holopad with the Force.

Ri'kan overseeing the next stage of Heta's plan

Ri'kan silently observed as Heta addressed the Hidden Chain, attributing the events on Ruhnuk to Bask Sunn, declaring the Dar'manda as their new enemy, and proclaiming Darth Nul's holocron as their new trump card against Shae Vizla. Ri'kan was infuriated when Heta excluded him from her new inner circle, which comprised only herself and Sa'har. As the Hidden Chain departed, Ri'kan stormed off, unaware that he had violently touched the holopad with the Force.

Defeat

Ri'kan faces off against Sa'har and the Commander.

Ri'kan was stationed aboard the ship housing Darth Nul's holocron and the Holocron Machine, replicated from Nul's Temple on Elom. During their attempt to steal the holocron, Ri'kan angrily confronted Sa'har and the Alliance Commander, accusing his sister of returning only to take everything from him again as he prepared for battle. Ri'kan activated the machine, hoping to kill both the Commander and Sa'har at the cost of his own life, but it failed, only managing to knock Ri'kan off the platform. Sa'har rescued him. While the Commander claimed the holocron, the Twi'lek siblings were trapped as the ship was destroyed due to the machine overloading, leaving their fates uncertain.

Powers and abilities

Ri'kan Kateen's vibro-ax

Ri'kan Kateen was a formidable Mandalorian shock trooper. Although his Force-sensitivity was not as strong as his sister's, he became a skilled warrior. He could, however, tap into the dark side to use the Force. Ri'kan excelled in melee combat, and his preferred weapon was a vibro-ax.

Behind the scenes

Ri'kan Kateen is first introduced in the Disorder cinematic for the Star Wars: The Old Republic: Legacy of the Sith expansion.

Gameplay alternatives

In Game Update 7.5: Desperate Defiance, when Sa'har pleads with the player to help pull Ri'kan up, three choices are presented:

  • If the player selects the light side dialogue and helps save Ri'kan, Sa'har will promptly save Darth Nul's holocron before it is crushed by debris and gives it to the player, which Ri'kan witnesses upon waking up. As the player flees, Ri'kan uses the Force to immobilize Sa'har, forcing her to seal the exit to allow the player to escape. Ri'kan then stands over a bare conscious Sa'har and roars furiously.
  • If the player selects the neutral dialogue, they will prioritize retrieving the holocron. However, as the player hurries to assist Sa'har, a large piece of debris separates them. As the player departs, presuming the Twi'leks are dead, it is revealed that Sa'har managed to pull up Ri'kan by herself, and the two siblings gaze into each other's eyes.
  • If the player selects the dark side dialogue, they will simply seize the holocron and abandon them. Sa'har will then pull up Ri'kan by herself, narrowly avoiding being crushed by debris, leaving the two siblings to regard each other.

Regardless of the player's decision, both siblings are presumed to have perished in the destruction of the Hidden Chain Flagship.
