Rootleaf stew, a meal frequently made by Jedi Master Yoda during his period of voluntary isolation on Dagobah, was a concoction of roots and swamp vegetation. This mixture was simmered for a period of ten minutes, resulting in a dish with a distinctly acidic flavor. Famously, Yoda cooked root-leaf stew on the very night he encountered Luke Skywalker, the individual who would later become his Jedi apprentice. Skywalker described the stew's texture as akin to cooked brains, and its aroma as reminiscent of a waste disposal site during the hot season on Tatooine. However, he conceded that its flavor was not as unpleasant as its appearance suggested. During Skywalker's stay with the Ewoks in Bright Tree Village on Endor, he was presented with a serving of rootleaf stew, which he considered "not quite as bad" as Yoda's version. An Ortolan merchant at the Spur Orbiting Market offered rootleaf stew for sale during Beilert Valance's and Cadeliah's visit.
Strono Tuggs created a less intense variation of this stew, and included its preparation instructions in his cookbook.
