Bright Tree Village

Bright Tree Village, situated on Endor during the Galactic Civil War, served as the ancestral home for the eponymous tribe of Ewoks.

Characteristics

Nestled among the evergreen trees within Endor's Happy Grove Forest, the village was constructed approximately fifteen meters above the forest floor. This elevated settlement consisted of thatched, nest-like huts that housed nearly 200 Ewoks, securely attached to the evergreen trees. Communal meeting spaces were central to the village, alongside dwellings for tribal elders and the family of Chief Chirpa, including the Council of Elders. Larger huts, accommodating extended families, were positioned around the village's outer limits. A network of rope ladders, bridges, vines, and catwalks provided connectivity throughout the village. While the majority of villagers lived in the upper forest canopy, unmarried Ewoks resided in smaller huts beneath the main village, maintaining vigilance against potential threats.

The village at night

Lookouts used the village's upper canopy to warn of approaching gorax and condor dragons, with fires and torchlights illuminating the village at night. The conifer trees surrounding Bright Tree Village provided fire-resistant bark that also served as an effective insect repellent. Their branches were crafted into effective spears, bows, slingshots, glider frames, and catapult components. Gliders could be launched from the canopy to patrol the surrounding lands and valleys. Consistent with Ewok architectural traditions, the huts within Bright Tree Village offered warm and comfortable interiors. A central cooking fire was used for roasting meat on a spit and boiling soups in clay pots. Storage areas beneath the floor held food supplies and kindling, while sleeping mats and furs were arranged in the lofts above. Wooden stools and baskets were commonly found throughout the living spaces, with Ewok hoods, capes, and tools hanging on the walls.

Despite their arboreal lifestyle, Bright Tree Village inhabitants regularly ventured to the forest floor to gather berries, collect herbs, and engage in hunting. Certain Ewoks, such as the Warrick family, also maintained huts and lodges at ground level.

History

C-3PO recounts the tale of the Rebel Alliance to the Ewoks.

Before the Battle of Endor, the Ewok named Romba became a refugee following the destruction of his own village. This destruction was caused by the construction of a shield generator complex by the Galactic Empire for the second Death Star. Eventually, Chief Chirpa welcomed Romba into Bright Tree Village, where Chirpa would govern for 42 seasons leading up to the battle.

In the time leading up to the Battle of Endor, the Ewoks captured Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 close to the village. This capture occurred after Chewbacca attempted to consume a dead verkle that was being utilized as hunting bait. Separately, the Ewok Wicket W. Warrick befriended Princess Leia Organa, who had become separated from the others. Wicket brought Leia back to the village on friendly terms, and as a reward for her bravery, they gifted her a dress. The other Rebels were imprisoned in the village and nearly cooked for a feast. However, C-3PO, whom the Ewoks revered as a deity, convinced them to release the prisoners. This was after Luke used the Force to lift Threepio into the air, frightening many Ewoks into submission.

Threepio recounted the Alliance's battles against the Galactic Empire, eventually securing the group's acceptance as tribe members. This followed a discussion between Chirpa, the shaman Logray, and his two best hunters, Teebo and Asha Fahn. In the middle of the night, unbeknownst to the Rebels, the Ewoks held a war council in the village. Chirpa reminded the tribe of the members killed and villages destroyed by the Empire, which swayed the village to fight against the Empire. One of his best hunters, Asha, also swayed them, while Romba argued that the upcoming conflict involved all Ewok tribes. Chirpa quickly dispatched messengers to request assistance from the other tribes.

Bright Tree Village the night after the Battle of Endor

The Ewoks subsequently joined the battle against the Galactic Empire. Soon after the victory, two surviving Imperial TIE Fighters attempted to attack the village but were intercepted and destroyed by the Ghost. That evening, the village was the site of celebrations honoring the death of Emperor Sheev Palpatine and the Empire's defeat.

Decades after the Battle of Endor, the village remained composed mainly of simple, scattered huts. Salvaged Imperial equipment served as the only visible reminder of the village's involvement in the battle.

Kneesaa, Chief Chirpa's daughter, eventually succeeded him as chief after his passing.

In 35 ABY, following the Battle of Exegol, Wicket and his son Pommet Warrick witnessed the destruction of a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer in orbit.
