Surabat, a small community, could be found in the Surabat River Valley on the planet of Batuu. The people residing there were known for being tough and private, with many participating in the perilous activity of gathering Golden Lichen from the nearby spires.
Located within the Surabat River Valley on the Outer Rim planet Batuu, Surabat was a modest settlement. While possessing natural beauty, the area was untamed, distant, and isolated, experiencing severe weather such as frequent strong days of wind and snowy winter seasons. Valleys, towering spires, and mountains formed the surrounding landscape. During the war involving the First Order and the Resistance, the town lacked many modern comforts.
Residences in the area included spire-integrated apartment buildings housing multiple families, larger single-family homes, and smaller dwellings constructed from wood and mud. The latter shared architectural similarities with buildings in Black Spire Outpost, and some even featured underground chambers.
The people living in Surabat were resilient, strong, and kept to themselves, building their homes at the foot of the massive spires and mountains that enclosed the settlement. A lot of them came from families that were involved in crop farming and the raising of animals.
A significant portion of the population engaged in the hazardous occupation of harvesting Golden Lichen from the spires close to their homes. Other residents traveled for an hour by transport to Black Spire Outpost for employment. These commuters gathered daily at the local depot to board a shuttle operated by Oga Garra, the owner of Oga's Cantina in the outpost. At the end of the work day, the same shuttle transported them back home.
Surabat's creation was part of the detailed background developed for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. This themed area opened to the public on May 31, 2019 at Disneyland Park, and on August 29, 2019, at Disney's Hollywood Studios within Walt Disney World.
