Plot summary

The story unfolds in 3999 BBY, focusing on the Jedi apprentice Andur Sunrider, his wife Nomi, their daughter Vima, and their droid A-3DO. They depart from their home world, H'ratth, intending to find the secluded Jedi Master Thon on Ambria within the Stenness system. Andur, dispatched by his former Master Chamma to train under Thon, carries valuable Adegan crystals as a gift from Chamma to Thon. En route to the Stenness Node, the Sunriders make a stop at a hyperspace terminal to replenish their provisions for the final leg of their journey to see Thon. During their stay at the hyperspace terminal, Bogga the Hutt, a notorious crime lord, learns of Andur's possession of the rare Adegan crystals. Desiring the crystals for himself, Bogga commands his group of enforcers to ambush Andur and seize the crystals. Bogga's gang successfully ambushes and murders Andur, but fails to retrieve the Adegan crystals from his body. After his death, Andur manifests as a Force ghost to Nomi, urging her to take up his lightsaber and defend herself and their daughter. Guided by her deceased husband's encouragement and her own latent Force sensitivity, Nomi manages to kill two of the criminals, causing the rest to flee. Gathering Vima, A-3DO, and the crystals, she resumes their journey to Ambria.

Upon reaching the desolate planet Ambria, Nomi instructs A-3DO to remain with their ship, the Lightside Explorer. Accompanied by Vima, Nomi embarks on a journey, trusting her instincts to guide her to Jedi Master Thon. Traversing the harsh deserts of Ambria, Nomi and Vima encounter a solitary figure riding a fearsome creature. Recognizing the figure as a Jedi, Nomi follows him to his humble abode, a small farm situated in the heart of the desert. Meanwhile, acting on Bogga's orders to acquire the elusive Adegan crystals, several gangsters track Nomi to Ambria, where they locate A-3DO inside the Lightside Explorer. Mistakenly believing the crystals to be hidden within the ship, the thugs shoot A-3DO while searching for the treasure, unaware that Nomi has taken the crystals with her. Following Nomi's trail to the dwelling where she and Vima are, Bogga's men are confronted by Nomi's host. However, the Jedi is overwhelmed by the sheer number of thugs. Despite the gangsters' apparent advantage, the creature Nomi had seen the Jedi riding intervenes in the fight. Capitalizing on the element of surprise, the creature tramples several of the pirates, forcing the remaining gang members to retreat. Safe for the moment, it is revealed that the figure Nomi had met was actually a Jedi Knight named Oss Wilum, and that the fierce-looking beast is actually Master Thon.

Under Thon's tutelage, Nomi begins her training as a Jedi Knight, alongside Oss Wilum. While the Jedi training progresses on Ambria, a ship belonging to Bogga the Hutt is hijacked by the pirate Finhead Stonebone, who seeks to seize the valuable ore onboard. However, Bogga himself, aboard his flagship Enforcer One, foils Stonebone's plan and captures him and his pirate crew. Expecting execution for his crimes, Stonebone is surprised when Bogga decides that the pirate and his gang will atone for their actions by traveling to Ambria, where Stonebone is tasked with killing Master Thon and anyone with him, as well as retrieving the Adegan crystals that Bogga has been trying to acquire. Stonebone, leading his pirate crew and some of Bogga's thugs, launches an assault on Thon's homestead, managing to capture Thon due to Nomi's hesitation to use violence after her husband's murder. However, realizing that Thon will not retaliate, in order to demonstrate the Jedi path to her, Nomi decides to use her Force abilities to attack Stonebone and his gang. Through the combined efforts of Nomi and the freed Thon, the pirates are driven off Ambria, never to return.
