The Dark Forces Saga

The Dark Forces Saga, a series comprising six distinct game scenarios, was initially made available on the Wizards of the Coast website. These scenarios, penned by Abel G. Peña together with Jason Fry, drew inspiration from characters within the well-known Dark Forces narrative and were designed for use as tabletop role-playing game (RPG) adventures. Within these episodes, one can find plot ideas, statistics for weapons, character profiles and stats for key figures, and comprehensive background information concerning the planets featured in the Dark Forces storyline.

Subsequently, Peña and Fry collaborated on a supplementary piece for Star Wars Miniatures, titled Kyle Katarn's Tale.

Parts

The Dark Forces Saga, Part 1

This installment, released on April 7, 2005, presents an in-depth exploration of Kyle Katarn's life, tracing his journey from his early days as a farmboy on Sulon to his disappearance during the Yuuzhan Vong War, and encompassing all events in between. RPG statistics for Kyle during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion are provided, along with details about his reliable, modified Bryar pistol.

The saga also delves into Rom Mohc, offering background details and RPG stats from the A New Hope era. It uncovers his history during the Clone Wars and his fascination with battle droids.

The Dark Forces Saga, Part 2: Unsung Heroes of the Light

Also launched on April 7, 2005, this section offers fresh and extensive insights into Jan Ors and Qu Rahn, accompanied by RPG stats for both. Additionally, it includes an "adventure seed" centered on Jan Ors and Mara Jade Skywalker's search for Kyle, which occurs after the New Jedi Order series. The Moldy Crow, Kyle's ship, is also given a backstory and statistical information.

The Dark Forces Saga, Part 3: Pride of the Dark Side

Published on May 12, 2005, this part furnishes comprehensive details and statistics pertaining to Yun and Sariss. An "adventure seed" is included, describing a scenario in which Yun travels to Bunduki and encounters the Followers of Palawa, as well as, surprisingly, Arden Lyn.

Of particular interest, an old Decipher SWCCG card titled Prophetess is retconned to represent Sariss.

The Dark Forces Saga, Part 4: Of the Crudest Matter

Appearing on May 26, 2005, this segment delivers in-depth backgrounds and RPG statistics for Maw and Boc Aseca. Furthermore, it details two lightsaber combat techniques, Trispzest and Jar'Kai.

The Dark Forces Saga, Part 5: Two Peas in a Pod

Released on June 9, 2005, this section establishes the elaborate histories of Sithspawn Gorc and Pic, along with their creation at the hands of Agent Blackhole. Extensive data and stats concerning Dromund Kaas are also provided.

Two adventure seeds are presented. The first involves a mission where Kyle Katarn is tasked with recovering Yoda's lightsaber, which was previously in Pic's possession. The second, titled "Kyle Katarn, Meet Mara Jade," requires Kyle Katarn to rescue Mara Jade from Agent Blackhole.

The Dark Forces Saga, Part 6: Outcasts and Megalomaniacs Welcome

Published on June 15, 2005, this part concentrates on the detailed history of Jerec. Notably, it reveals that Jerec was once the Padawan of Jocasta Nu. Desann, the antagonist from Jedi Outcast, is also examined in detail.

Finally, the Valley of the Jedi located on Ruusan receives its own dedicated coverage.

Continuity

Several retcons present in The Dark Force Saga are inconsistent with other Legends materials. Some instances include:

  • The killing of Boc : The Dark Force Saga depicts Kyle Katarn defeating Boc with Yun's lightsaber, while the Dark Forces: Jedi Knight novella portrays Katarn eliminating Boc using a dark-side ability known as a spear of midnight black (which itself clashes with the game, as this power is not available to the player).
  • Jerec as Miraluka : The Dark Forces Saga identifies Jerec as a member of the Miraluka race, whereas The New Essential Guide to Characters classified him as a Human. The canon established him as Miraluka.
  • Sariss and Yun : The Dark Forces Saga portrays Sariss and Yun's relationship as one where she views him as a son, while the Dark Forces: Jedi Knight novella suggests she lacks maternal feelings for him, instead considering him her closest acquaintance.
  • Gorc and Pic : Although they appear to be the same species in both concept art and the game, their revised backstory indicates they are from different species and possess a mutation.
