Plot summary

A botany lesson

Nubs, along with other Jedi Initiates, attends a botany class on the verdant world of Langsha-Raang, where they learn about plant care. Nubs earns praise from Varish, their orange-skinned alien instructor, for his aptitude with plants after watering a Vreenak Bloom. Lys Solay and Kai Brightstar, Nubs' companions, are also in attendance. Brightstar informs Varish of Nubs' excitement about visiting Langsha-Raang, while Solay mentions Nubs' passion for plants. Before the younglings are dismissed, Varish announces one final lesson, requesting Nubs to come forward for a demonstration.

Varish elucidates that each plant has unique needs for optimal health, emphasizing the importance of observation to understand these needs. She presents Nubs with an ailing Albeekian Sun Grass, a plant native to sunny planets, and challenges him to identify its deficiency. Nubs initially waters the plant, but Varish prompts him to observe more closely. Upon opening a curtain to reveal sunlight, the plant flourishes.

Nubs then becomes intrigued by a nearby grumble vine, inadvertently causing it to drop a purple seed when he touches it. Varish quickly intervenes, explaining that the plant originates from a planet with limited sunlight. Before she can elaborate further, the droid Dee interrupts, informing her that the children are late for their shuttle back to Tenoo. Varish apologizes for the time lapse and postpones the discussion about the grumble vine until the next lesson.

The rogue vine

Before their departure, Varish gifts Nubs a container of seeds for a plant suitable for Tenoo, instructing him to provide water and ample sunlight. Inadvertently, Nubs spills some seeds, which fall beneath the front table. While retrieving them, he mistakenly picks up the purple seed from the grumble vine. Varish bids the children farewell as she escorts them to their shuttle.

Upon their return to Tenoo, the three younglings plant their seedlings in raised plots within the Tenoo Jedi Temple's garden. Brightstar and Solay activate water dispensers to irrigate the plants. They notice that one plot remains barren despite being watered, prompting Solay to ask Nubs what it requires. Nubs suggests sunlight. Shortly thereafter, the grumble vine begins to sprout massive green vines, engulfing the garden infrastructure. Nubs and his friends flee to safety. Solay, assuming the vines originated from Ms. Varish's seeds, remarks that the plant appears "not happy." Brightstar emphasizes the need to control the grumble vine.

Solay deactivates the water dispenser, but the grumble vine continues to proliferate. Its vines snake around pillars and stone structures within the Temple Garden, sprouting purple flowers. The vines then target the three younglings, who are compelled to draw their training sabers for defense. Discovering the grumble vines' aversion to their sabers, they decide to use them to herd the plant back towards its enclosure.

Stopping the grumble vine

Brightstar attempts to uproot the grumble vine, but a vine seizes him and hurls him towards Nubs. Solay is forced back by the vine, which then advances towards the Jedi Temple, scaling its walls. The three younglings attempt to halt its progress, but it carries them to the temple's roof. After landing inside the temple, Brightstar, Solay, and Nubs gather the other younglings – including a green-skinned Mirialan – describing the situation as a "gardening situation." Inside the temple, Dee expresses his panic and suggests contacting Jedi Master Zia Zaldor Zanna. Before they can evacuate, the vines breach the temple by creating holes in the walls.

During their retreat, Nubs becomes anxious. Solay reassures him of his superior plant knowledge, while Brightstar reminds him that the Force is with him. The two depart to evacuate the others, leaving Nubs to confront the grumble vine in the foyer. Recalling Ms. Varish's advice about observing plants, he decides to use a banner to shield the grumble vine's flower and stem from the sun, temporarily halting its advance. Upon Brightstar and Solay's return, Nubs informs them that the plant prefers shade over sunlight.

Solay concurs and suggests blocking sunlight from the grumble vine's core to inhibit its growth. However, two vines seize Solay and Brightstar. Nubs uses the Force to reach the plant's center but is ensnared by several vines. Despite being restrained, he manages to use the banner to cover the grumble vine's core, causing it to cease its advance and release him and his friends. As the grumble vine retreats, Nubs and his friends realize that the plant needed shade. However, the vines have inflicted significant damage to the Jedi Temple by dislodging bricks and stones. Dee states he is not programmed for repairs, while Solay suggests informing Master Zia of the incident. Brightstar proposes finding a new home for the plant, prompting Nubs to have an idea.

Resolution

Later, repair droids are shown completing repairs to the Jedi Temple while Zia updates Varish on the situation via holoprojector. Varish apologizes for inadvertently releasing a grumble vine seed. Brightstar points out that Nubs successfully stopped it. Varish praises Nubs for his persistence and his application of the lesson on observation. She assures him that his grumble vine has safely returned to Langsha-Raang in a storage container. She promises to care for it and inquires about the rest of his garden. Nubs carries the holoprojector while showing an impressed Varish the other plants he has grown.
