Dex Tiree

Dex Tiree was a male human pilot originating from the planet of Onderon. A skilled ace, he fought for the Rebel Alliance during the critical Battle of Yavin. In that battle, Tiree piloted a BTL-A4 Y-wing assault starfighter/bomber as Gold Two within Gold Squadron, serving as wingman to Jon Vander. Unfortunately, Darth Vader in his TIE Advanced x1 destroyed Tiree's fighter.

Biography

Sometime before 19 BBY, Dex Tiree's birth occurred on Onderon. As a child, he visited Alderaan accompanied by his parents. Later, in 12 BBY, his parents welcomed a daughter into the family. At some time before 0 BBY, Tiree chose to join the Rebellion, where he flew a Y-Wing Starfighter as a member of Gold Squadron. He also acquired an R5 series astromech droid which he named "Sparks," inspired both by a saying his mother often used and by a fire the droid inadvertently ignited on a moon orbiting the planet Utapau.

Tiree flying at the Battle of Yavin

During the counterattack on the Death Star in 0 BBY, Tiree flew as Gold Two, his assigned callsign within the Alliance. Despite the efforts of his Gold Squadron comrades to target the Death Star's turbolasers, Dex successfully eliminated one of them. Tiree, along with Davish Krail, gave covering fire for Captain Jon "Dutch" Vander as Gold Squadron initiated their initial bombing run on the Death Star's thermal exhaust port, situated at the end of the meridian trench.

When Vander gave the order for his squadron to engage their targeting computers, Tiree confirmed that he had achieved a lock on the exhaust port. Shortly thereafter, the turbolasers ceased their attacks, leaving Tiree puzzled. Darth Vader then intercepted Gold Squadron in his TIE Advanced x1, resulting in the deaths of both Tiree and Sparks when Vader shot down their starfighter from the rear.

Behind the scenes

Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope marked the initial appearance of Dex Tiree. Jeremy Sinden portrayed him, but Harry Shearer provided the overdubbed voice. The reference book Ultimate Star Wars, published in 2015, officially gave him the full name of Dex Tiree.

The helmet prop used by Tiree—or a replica of it—was subsequently worn by an unnamed pilot (identified as Habeer Zignean within the Star Wars Legends continuity) in The Empire Strikes Back.
