An individual identified as Viggen was a human of male designation who held a position within the Galactic Empire's military. Four years prior to the pivotal Battle of Yavin, he held the role of commanding officer at an Imperial base situated on the planet Imvur. During his tenure, the base faced an assault from a group of insurgents opposing the Empire, led by Commander Ryden. Although Viggen's forces inflicted damage upon the rebels' transport starship, they successfully absconded with stolen provisions. Driven by a desire to eradicate Ryden's operations, the Imperial C.O. subsequently tracked the insurgents to their base, also located on Imvur. Upon arriving in Imvur's orbit aboard an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, Viggen was pleased to discover the rebels unprepared for evacuation. Disregarding the advice of a lieutenant, the C.O. opted for an immediate ground assault instead of initiating an orbital bombardment. Taking place in one of two AT-AT walkers, Viggen spearheaded his war machines towards Ryden's base, effortlessly breaching the rebels' weak defenses.
At some point, the rebels apparently decided to launch a counter-offensive, with three MLC-3 light tanks emerging from the base and targeting the AT-ATs. Confident that these outdated tanks posed no threat to his walkers, Viggen pressed on towards his main objective, disregarding the MLC-3s. However, his perception swiftly altered when one of the tanks, piloted by the rebel Kanan Jarrus, successfully destroyed an AT-AT by striking its neck at maximum power. The Imperial then discerned that the tanks were merely executing diversionary tactics. When Ryden was compelled to abandon his tank, Viggen instructed his troops to eliminate him. However, this order was interrupted by the unexpected arrival of a rebel evac ship, which brought the remaining AT-AT crashing down. Although Viggen and the pilots survived the walker's crash, they were forced to witness the rebels' escape from Imvur.
Throughout the Galactic Empire's period of power, Viggen functioned as the commanding officer of an Imperial base and also held command of his own Imperial I-class Star Destroyer. In 4 BBY, his base was subjected to a raid by a rebel cell under the leadership of Commander Ryden. The rebels managed to successfully steal a large amount of supplies during the raid, but their transport was heavily damaged and one of them was captured by the Imperials before the rest escaped.
Incensed by the difficulties Ryden and his subordinates had caused him, Viggen journeyed on his Star Destroyer with the intention of locating the rebels' base, which also happened to be located on Imvur. The rebels became aware of his approach after intercepting a transmission he had sent. Upon reaching orbit, one of the vessel's lieutenants notified Viggen of their arrival. Eager to personally oversee the cell's demise, Viggen declared his intention to lead Imperial forces on the planet's surface to destroy the base. He even threatened to demote the lieutenant for questioning the wisdom of such a decision and suggesting an orbital bombardment instead. Instructions were then relayed to Viggen's troops to prepare for an assault, and two All Terrain Armored Transports were deployed to Imvur's surface, with Viggen aboard one of them.
As the two walkers advanced through a canyon towards the base, they triggered the rebel's outer perimeter alarm and were promptly detected by a lookout post. The post managed to transmit imagery of Viggen's forces back to Ryden at the base before being destroyed by the Imperials. Turrets positioned along the canyon walls then commenced firing on the walkers, but their weaponry lacked the power to penetrate the vehicles' [armor](/article/armor]. Consequently, Viggen directed his forces to proceed unhindered, destroying the rebel defenses in sectors three and four as they advanced. The AT-AT's sensors subsequently detected three approaching targets: a trio of MLC-3 light tanks piloted by Ryden himself and two members of a separate rebel cell providing assistance to Ryden's: the former clone trooper Rex and the Jedi Kanan Jarrus, both of whom possessed prior experience in engaging All Terrain Armored Transports.
Convinced that the tanks represented a futile gesture by the rebels and would be incapable of damaging the walkers, Viggen instructed his AT-AT pilots to disregard the diversionary tactics employed by the tanks and continue towards the base. However, his stance rapidly shifted when the rebel's astromech droid C1-10P piloted the VCX-series auxiliary starfighter Phantom into the canyon and opened fire on the second walker's neck, weakening it sufficiently for Jarrus to fire with his tank and destroy the walker. Realizing that his walkers were not as invulnerable as he had previously believed, Viggen ordered the destruction of the tanks. Jarrus narrowly avoided a gruesome death as he abandoned his tank before it was crushed beneath one of the AT-AT's massive feet.
Having deciphered the rebels' tactics, the Imperials managed to prevent the Phantom from achieving a clear shot on the neck of the walker carrying Viggen. Nevertheless, Ryden managed to score a hit with his tank's weaponry, although this action depleted the vehicle's power and failed to disable the walker. As the commander was forced to abandon his powerless vehicle, Viggen saw the kill shot he had been waiting for and ordered his men to gun Ryden down. Before the Imperial could exact revenge for the assault on his base, the rebel Gozanti-class cruiser Evac One arrived and distracted the Imperials by firing on the walker from above. This provided Rex with an opportunity to fire from the last powered tank, and his shot crippled the walker, causing it to crash into the side of the canyon. Viggen survived the crash but was unable to prevent all of the rebels from escaping once again with the supplies aboard the cruiser, detonating explosives within their base as they did. He was left standing on the surface of Imvur, vowing to one day avenge himself upon Ryden.
Viggen was a fair-skinned human with blue eyes, gray hair and a black moustache. Following Ryden's raid on his base, Viggen sought retribution and resolved to personally obliterate his base on Imvur's surface, insisting on leading troops on the planet's surface as he would enjoy watching them suffer. When one of his subordinates proposed a more logical bombardment, he threatened to demote the man for daring to question his judgment. On the ground, the attack initially progressed more smoothly than he had anticipated, with the rebels unable to inflict damage on the walkers. However, he was taken aback when the rebel tanks managed to destroy one of the AT-ATs and left fuming on Imvur once the rebels managed to escape.
While aboard his Star Destroyer, Viggen wore a standard gray Imperial officer's uniform including the cap. Upon traveling to Imvur's surface however, he donned a set of combat armor over the top of the uniform.
Viggen first appeared in the comic strip "Vulnerable Areas," which was written by Martin Fisher and illustrated by Bob Molesworth. The strip was published in Star Wars Rebels Magazine 17 in 2016.
