X-Wing Rogue Squadron #1, also known as "The Rebel Opposition, Part 1", marks the inaugural issue of the Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron comic book series. Dark Horse Comics published it on July 1, 1995.
As a seasoned X-wing pilot, Wedge Antilles stands out as one of the few who survived engagements against both Death Stars. One might assume, given his history and leadership of Rogue Squadron, that he has encountered every conceivable situation. However, when he takes charge of a rescue mission for a pilot downed on Cilpar, he uncovers something unexpected: a civilization that despises the Empire and holds even greater animosity towards the Alliance!
Wedge Antilles and Rogue Squadron find themselves in a heated aerial battle with a dozen Imperial TIE fighters above the neutral agricultural world of Cilpar. They are trying to halt an attack on a food convoy en route to Mrlsst. After performing a skillful maneuver to destroy two TIEs, Wes Janson's X-Wing sustains damage, forcing him to make an emergency landing near a stream. The rest of the squadron lands to the west of the city of Kiidan as Tycho Selchu sets off to locate Janson.
Antilles confers with Dllr Nep and Isplourrdacartha "Plourr" Estillo regarding the war's current state, with Plourr expressing suspicion that Janson or Selchu might be an Imperial spy. At the creek, Selchu saves Janson from his crashing fighter just before it explodes, although Janson's leg suffers a fracture. They seek refuge in a nearby cave, where Selchu fends off indigenous winged creatures while tending to Janson's injury.
Back at the rebel safehouse, Elscol Loro and her team confront Antilles and Plourr. Loro believes that the New Republic and the Empire (under the command of local Moff Boren Tascl) are secretly collaborating to overthrow the legitimate government of Cilpar. She leads the rebels to Tamarack, a formerly prosperous district devastated by the ongoing war. As they recover the corpse of Gates Harnik, a grocer who supplied the rebels, Loro explains her suspicions, noting that her organization had a rebel contact who knew their location when Moff Tascl attacked. Loro instructs Chang to cremate the recovered bodies to prevent them from being consumed by wild ronks.
Someone resembling Leia Organa discovers Selchu and Janson in the cave and holds them at blasterpoint. In Tamarack, Loro tells Antilles that her Wookiee companion Groznik was in her late husband Throm's debt for saving him from Imperial execution. Throm perished at the Battle of the Cliffs while attempting to liberate Cilpar, leaving Groznik in Loro's care. Antilles recounts his own experiences, particularly his participation in the assault on the second Death Star during the Battle of Endor. Loro discovers a music ball amidst the ruins of her home, and Nep identifies the melody as "Starlight by Moonlight". Suddenly, a squadron of Imperial walkers, led by Moff Tascl, invades the area.
