Zama-shiwo

ChirrutImweStaff-R1 Chirrut Îmwe excelled in the art of zama-shiwo. Zama-shiwo represents a style of unarmed combat that originated on the lunar surface of Jedha. Before the events of the First Battle of Geonosis, the Jedi apprentice named Charlin Plaka underwent training in zama-shiwo during an assignment on Jedha.

The Guardian of the Whills, known as Chirrut Îmwe, was a skilled practitioner of this martial art. When the Rodian individual Steya relocated to Jedha City along with her family prior to the conclusion of the Clone Wars, she requested instruction from him. For a number of years, Steya, who had a great interest in martial arts, would meet with Îmwe each morning to train in zama-shiwo facing the Temple of the Kyber. This martial art was described as "the inward eye of the outward hand." It was believed that zama-shiwo enabled its users to control their heart rate and oxygen consumption, granting them abilities that seemed almost supernatural. During the Battle of Scarif, Chirrut Îmwe utilized this art in his last moments to ensure he felt no suffering even as he lost blood and approached his end.

Behind the scenes

It was further developed in the novel Guardians of the Whills, penned by Greg Rucka and released on May 2, 2017. In the reference book, Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy, which was released on November 19, 2024, the martial art form was incorrectly spelled as Zamo-shiwo.
