720 light freighter

title: 720 light freighter

The 720 light freighter, also called the Ghtroc 720, represented a model of light freighter produced by Ghtroc Industries and was uniquely recognized by its resemblance to a tortoise. Conceived as a more modern and expansive variant of the 690 light freighter, its primary objective was to rival the widely successful YT-series from the Corellian Engineering Corporation.

Description

Distinguished by its unusual design, the 720 was a light freighter that featured substantial armor protection but only light offensive capabilities. Its two GI/80.b Overthruster ion engines were not placed at the rear, but instead, were encased in heavily reinforced nacelles at the front, flanking the bridge. The ship's central portion was largely dedicated to its pair of main cargo bays, providing a total capacity of 135 metric tons, while the rear section included two inclined escape pod chutes. This layout gave the Ghtroc 720 its distinctive tortoise-like appearance. It was built to accommodate a crew of two, along with space for up to eight additional passengers.

Despite being a robust and well-made vessel by most standards, the 720 possessed certain design shortcomings that deterred some potential buyers. Its most significant weakness was its limited firepower, consisting of a single twin light laser cannon mounted in a turret. Additional drawbacks included its display markings, optimized for Bith eyes but small and difficult for other species to interpret, its uncomfortable sleeping quarters for the crew, and the unique alarm sound for each system alert, which some customers found bothersome.

In line with the majority of light freighter designs, the 720 was intentionally designed to allow for extensive customization.

History

Ghtroc Industries, a highly regarded shipbuilding company based on the Bith homeworld of Clak'dor, was responsible for the creation of the 720 light freighter. As an enlarged version of the Ghtroc 690 light freighter, it was intended to dominate the light freighter market within the Outer Rim Territories, aiming to compete with the YT-series produced by the Corellian Engineering Corporation. Although the 720 never achieved the widespread success that Ghtroc had envisioned, it did cultivate a small but loyal following among smugglers and independent traders in the Outer Rim, and its robust construction led to it being nicknamed "Pocket Gozanti."

During the Galactic Civil War, Rebel operatives Sabine Wren, Rex, and Chopper embarked on a mission to recover an illicit modification program stored on the drive of the 720 light freighter known as the Treadwater.

During her early years on Jakku, Rey regularly practiced piloting the Ghtroc 720 utilizing a flight simulator.

In 35 ABY, at least one 720 was part of the fleet that gathered in response to General Lando Calrissian's call to arms against the forces of the Sith Eternal military.

Behind the scenes

The Ghtroc 720 light freighter made its initial appearance in the second edition rulebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game within the Star Wars Legends continuity in 1992. Later, the Ghtroc 720 was officially canonized in Before the Awakening, a young adult novel authored by Greg Rucka and released in 2015.
