Answering Jedi apprentice Ulic Qel-Droma's call for help, Republic rocket jumpers descend into the planet Onderon in order to quell the Freedon Nadd Uprising. As the battle rages, the Tetan royal heirs Satal and Aleema Keto crash their ship Krath Enchanter in the streets of Iziz but the young Ketos are able to escape with their lives.
Meanwhile, the Jedi task force from Ossus, led by Nomi Sunrider, approach Modon Kira's fortress citadel, which is under siege by Naddists, Sith war droids and siege machines. While the Jedi cruisers take out siege engines, Nomi and her fellow Jedi Kith Kark, Dace Diath, Qrrl Toq, and Shoaneb Culu charge into the battle and fight through the Naddist ranks. Though the Jedi managed to break the siege, Kith Kark is killed by a stray cannon.
With the siege engines destroyed, Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma, Tott Doneeta and Oss Wilum lead the Beast Riders out of the fortress, breaking the siege. Meanwhile, Nomi finds her battle meditation powers under attack by an unseen adversary that strikes her unconscious. Ulic comes to Nomi's aid and reveals that their adversary is King Ommin.
Meanwhile, Satal and Aleema Keto seek help translating their Sith book in the cafes of Iziz. A local leads them into the depths of the city to meet King Ommin, who grants them an audience. Believing that the Ketos will oversee the "great change" that is coming, Ommin gives Satal a Sith amulet with which he can read the book perfectly.
While King Ommin tasks Novar with finding a scribe to copy the Sith tome, King Ommin shows the Ketos his most "prize possession", the captive Jedi Master Arca Jeth. Arca is hung on the wall, suffering under deadly Sith magic. Ommin's goal is to extinguish his light utterly and resurrect him as a Dark Jedi. However, a defiant Arc tells Ommin that his Jedi Knights are coming.
Seven Jedi Ulic, Cay, Nomi, Dace, Qrrl, Tott and Oss Wilum fight their way into King Ommin's subterranean stronghold. Cay has his arm sliced off by a Sith war droid but Cay strikes him down with his lightsaber. The Jedi soon confront King Ommin, who strikes Nomi down with dark side energy. While Satal and Aleema escape with the Sith tome, Ulic slices off the former King's armature, sending him tumbling to the ground limply.
Without his iron armature to support his softened bones, Ommin collapses like an Arkanian jellyfish. Ulic demands to know where Master Arca is but Ommin is defiant even in his dying moments. Meanwhile, Satal and Aleema discover that the Force ghost of Freedon Nadd has killed the scribe. Regarding them as heirs to the dark side, he gives them the book, the talisman, and two Sith swords. Nadd guides them to a passage that leads them to the surface.
The Force ghost of Nadd appears beside the dying King Ommin but refuses to aid him, thinking that it is his time to die. After killing Ommin, Nadd believes that one of the Jedi belongs to the dark side. Master Arca soon appears and congratulates Ulic. Before the Jedi can deal with the dark side spirit, Nadd taunts them that the the Jedi have lost today before vanishing.
Following the defeat of the Freedon Nadd uprising, Republic forces occupy Iziz and place the city under martial law. Offworlders are evacuated to their home planets. Satal and Aleema travel offworld with their Sith treasures among the evacuees.
Master Arca supervises the purging of dark side influences from Onderon. The remains of Freedon Nadd, Queen Amanoa and now King Ommin are transported to the Tomb of Freedon Nadd on the jungle moon of Dxun. The Jedi, King Oron Kira, and Queen Galia oversee the entombment of the dark siders. Ulic asks Master Arca what Freedon Nadd meant when he said that the Jedi had lost.
Arca explains that Nadd was referring to the ancient Sith prophecy that the Dark Lords would return and that he had had heard similar stories from the Jedi Holocron. He urges the Jedi to cling to the light side of the Force, describing it as their ally. He urges Ulic to remember that where there is light, there can be no darkness.
