The state known as the Bactranate was a designation given by Jedi Master Vannar Treece to a domain within the Grumani sector. This domain was under the control of the Quermian Sith Lord Ayanos Bactra during the time of the New Sith Wars. Sarrassia was part of this state, and its capital was located on the planet Jutrand. Treece identified two bordering Sith states, which he called the Daimanate and the Odionate. The Bactranate met its end in 1032 BBY when Vilia Calimondra, the matriarch of the Calimondra family, instructed her grandchildren to betray Lord Bactra and invade his territory. The Bactranate quickly disintegrated, and its lands and business holdings were distributed among her grandchildren as part of a family bequest.
Following the downfall of the Chagras Hegemony in 1040 BBY, the Bactranate emerged as one of several Sith territories. Following the demise of its leader, Chagras, his former territory fell into disorder as various competing Sith warlords battled for control. Vilia Calimondra, the Calimondra family matriarch, fueled the conflict by promoting the Second Charge Matrica, ostensibly to bequeath her considerable empire and wealth to the grandchild who conquered the most land. Unlike most other Sith warlords in the Grumani sector who nationalized corporations and seized their assets and workforce, Bactra viewed them as valuable and chose to collaborate with them. This allowed the Bactranate to extend its influence into other areas of Sith Space that it couldn't directly control. Industrial Heuristics, a company specializing in the development of mobile war universities known as arxeums, was one such company.

In 1032 BBY, Sith Lord Odion discovered that his estranged younger brother Daiman had commissioned the development of a new warship prototype, the Convergence. He then dispatched Narsk Ka'hane, a Bothan spy operating independently, to gather intelligence on the ship and destroy the Black Fang research facility. Unbeknownst to Odion, Narsk was actually a deep-cover agent working for Vilia Calimondra, the Calimondra family matriarch, posing as a mercenary spy who offered his services to the highest bidder. However, Jedi Knight Kerra Holt intercepted Narsk and destroyed the datapad containing the data before destroying the building using baradium thermal charges. Like Narsk, she intended to sabotage Daiman's war effort by destroying the Black Fang facility. She then stole Narsk's Cryricept Mark IV stealth suit and left him to be captured by Daiman's Correctors. Despite Narsk's denials, Daiman suspected Odion's involvement in the bombing and devised a scheme to lure Odion into another trap on Gazzari.
Daiman then approached Lord Bactra with an offer to purchase an arxeum—a mobile university dedicated to war research—from Industrial Heuristics. Daiman also offered to provide the students for the university. The transaction was to take place on Gazzari, and he guaranteed safe passage for Bactra's forces to the Gazzari system. However, he arranged for Narsk to overhear the proceedings and then escape back to the Odionate. Daiman also hired several mercenaries, including Brigadier Jarrow Rusher, and persuaded them to set a trap on Gazzari. They positioned their forces, including artillery cannons, on the edge of a large caldera. As planned, Odion saw the Gazzari deal as an opportunity to cause further bloodshed and destruction, and he sent a fleet to invade the planet. Odion's forces invaded the planet, only to be trapped in the caldera by enemy fire. During the battle, Odion quickly regained the upper hand by deploying the Death Spiral—a massive mobile siege platform. However, Kerra destroyed the Death Spiral and rescued the children. She then convinced Brigadier Jarrow Rusher, who had lost most of his forces, to evacuate the refugees off-world aboard his troopship Diligence.
Unbeknownst to Kerra, Vilia, the Calimondra family matriarch, was monitoring her movements because the stealth suit tapped into an information network used by the Sith despot to monitor her underlings. During the Battle of Gazzari, Vilia sent a coded transmission to Narsk, instructing him to transmit a message to her grandsons, Odion and Daiman. The matriarch believed that Lord Bactra had outlived his usefulness to the family and ordered them to turn against the Bactranate. Odion's and Daiman's forces ceased fighting each other and attacked the Bactranate fleet in the system. They then launched an invasion of the Bactranate, with Odion's forces capturing the capital, Jutrand. Meanwhile, Lord Bactra went into hiding at a Quermian retirement colony. Within days, the Bactranate had collapsed, and Vilia convened a Bequest. The Bactranate's territories were divided among the Sith Lords Odion, Daiman, Malakite, and Lioko, while his vast corporate assets were divided among the family. While Odion acquired Jutrand through military conquest, Daiman acquired Industrial Heuristics. However, Odion challenged Daiman's claim to the company, arguing that it had been based on Jutrand and was therefore booty.
