Bactranate
Bactranate was the name Jedi Master Vannar Treece gave to a state in the Grumani sector, ruled by the Quermian Sith Lord Ayanos Bactra during the time of the New Sith Wars. The state encompassed the world Sarrassia, with its capital on the planet Jutrand. It bordered two Sith states that Treece called the Daimanate and the Odionate. In 1032 BBY, the Bactranate collapsed after Calimondra family matriarch Vilia Calimondra ordered her grandchildren to turn against Lord Bactra and invade his domain. Within days, the Bactranate had collapsed, and her grandchildren divided its territories and corporate assets among themselves during a family bequest.
History
The Bactranate was among the Sith fiefdoms that arose after the collapse of the Chagras Hegemony in 1040 BBY. Following the death of its titular ruler, Chagras, his former domain fell into anarchy as several rival Sith warlords battled for control. The Calimondra family matriarch Vilia Calimondra encouraged the conflict by promoting the Second Charge Matrica under the pretext of leaving her considerable empire and assets to whichever grandchild conquered the most territory. Whereas most other Sith warlords in the Grumani sector nationalized corporations and confiscated their assets and work forces, Bactra regarded them as assets and chose to cooperate with them as partners. This allowed the Bactranate to extend its influence into other regions of Sith Space that he could not control. One such company was Industrial Heuristics, which specialized in developing mobile war universities known as arxeums.
In 1032 BBY, the Sith Lord Odion discovered that his estranged younger brother, Daiman, had commissioned a new prototype warship called the Convergence. He sent the Bothan spy Narsk Ka'hane, an independent operative, to gather intelligence on the vessel and destroy the Black Fang research installation. Unknown to Odion, Narsk was in fact a deep-cover agent working for the Calimondra family matriarch Vilia Calimondra, while posing as a mercenary spy who sold his services to the highest bidder. However, the Jedi Knight Kerra Holt intercepted Narsk and destroyed the datapad containing the data, then demolished the building with baradium thermal charges. Like Narsk, she meant to destroy the Black Fang facility in order to sabotage Daiman's war effort. She then took Narsk's Cryricept Mark IV stealth suit and left him to be captured by Daiman's Correctors. Despite Narsk's denials, Daiman suspected that Odion had been involved in the bombing and devised a fabricated scheme to lure Odion into another trap on Gazzari.
Daiman then offered Lord Bactra a deal to purchase an arxeum—a mobile university devoted to war research—from Industrial Heuristics. He also offered to supply the university's students. The transaction was to take place on Gazzari, and he promised Bactra's forces safe passage to the Gazzari system. However, he arranged for Narsk to eavesdrop on the proceedings and then flee back to the Odionate. Daiman also hired several mercenaries, including the Brigadier Jarrow Rusher, and persuaded to set a trap on Gazzari. They gathered their forces, including artillery cannons, at the edge of a huge caldera. As planned, Odion viewed the Gazzari deal as a chance to cause further bloodshed and destruction and sent a fleet to invade the planet. Odion's forces invaded, only to be trapped in the caldera by enemy fire. During the battle, Odion quickly regained the advantage by deploying the Death Spiral—a massive mobile siege platform. However, Kerra destroyed the Death Spiral and succeeded in saving the children. She then persuaded the mercenary Brigadier Jarrow Rusher—who had lost five-sixths of his forces—to evacuate the refugees offworld aboard his troopship Diligence.
Unknown to Kerra, the Calimondra family matriarch Vilia could monitor her movements because the stealth suit impigned onto an information network used by the Sith despot to monitor her underlings. During the Battle of Gazzari, Vilia sent Narsk a coded transmission ordering him to relay a message to her grandsons Odion and Daiman. The matriarch had decided that Lord Bactra had outlived his usefulness to the family and ordered them to turn against the Bactranate. Odion's and Daiman's forces stopped fighting one another and attacked the Bactranate fleet in the system. They then launched an invasion of the Bactranate, with Odion's forces capturing the capital, Jutrand. Meanwhile, Lord Bactra went into hiding at a Quermian retirement colony. Within days, the Bactranate had collapsed, and Vilia convened a Bequest. The Bactranate's territories were divided among the Sith Lords Odion, Daiman, Malakite, and Lioko, while the family's members divided its vast corporate assets. Odion obtained Jutrand through military conquest, while Daiman acquired Industrial Heuristics. However, Odion disputed Daiman's claim to the company, arguing that it had been based on Jutrand and was therefore booty.
