During the Galactic Empire's time, Bansu Ro, a human male born on Lothal, found his family in opposition to the Empire, as they sided with the rebels. Consequently, Ro distanced himself from his family and entered the Imperial Academy located on Carida. Despite his family's rebel ties initially threatening his Imperial career, Ro was eventually accepted into the Empire's 204th Imperial Fighter Wing in 4 ABY. Following the Battle of Jakku and the subsequent fall of the Galactic Empire, four months later in 5 ABY, he found himself as a former Imperial on Freerock.
Bansu Ro's initial appearance was in the Star Wars: TIE Fighter comic series, specifically in the fourth issue. This issue, penned by Jody Houser with pencils by Rogê Antônio and Ig Guara, was released by Marvel Comics on July 17, 2019. The existence of Bansu Ro's family was later confirmed in Victory's Price, the concluding novel of Alexander Freed's Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron trilogy, which saw publication in 2021.
