Freerock

Freerock, a planet in Wild Space close to the Unknown Regions, resided within both the Expansion Region and the Interior region. Previously without a name, it housed an abandoned monastery–turned–outpost. 5 ABY, specifically four months after the Battle of Jakku where the Galactic Empire met its final defeat, saw Freerock become a sanctuary for both refugees from the battle and former Imperials, including Bansu Ro, a one-time TIE pilot.

Nath Tensent, previously a New Republic pilot and before that a TIE pilot, journeyed to Freerock. He located Ro at the Rim's Edge cantina and offered the ex-Imperial a position within his newly forming crew. Simultaneously, Wyl Lark, who had served alongside Tensent in the New Republic, discovered his former squadronmate and extended an invitation for him to rejoin the government service. Tensent declined, feeling out of place in the New Republic, and they respectfully parted ways. Sometime between 34 and 35 ABY, Strono Tuggs, the chef, visited the Rim's Edge on Freerock. He sampled the signature drink and subsequently included an entry about it in his cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook.

Description

Located at coordinates H-13 on the Standard Galactic Grid, Freerock was a planet that fell within the Expansion Region and [the Interior](/article/the_interior] region. Its location was in Wild Space, in proximity to the Unknown Regions.

History

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Freerock was a planet without a name. It was during this time that Nath Tensent, then a corrupt Imperial TIE fighter pilot, visited the Rim's Edge cantina which was located at Freerock's outpost, which had once been a monastery. In 5 ABY, the New Republic delivered the Empire's final blow at the Battle of Jakku. Tensent fought in that battle as a New Republic pilot against the Empire's 204th Imperial Fighter Wing. Freerock gained its name in the four months following the battle, becoming a refuge for refugees from Jakku. Former members of the New Republic and Imperial forces shared stories of the war at the Rim's Edge. The cantina also drew pirates, explorers, fortune hunters, and smugglers, some of whom were plotting together. Among the ex-Imperials was Bansu Ro, a former TIE pilot in the 204th.

Nath Tensent tracked Bansu Ro (pictured) down on Freerock.

Four months after Jakku, Tensent, having left the New Republic, went back to Freerock to find Ro. He had already recruited two other veterans from the 204th, Creet and Nord Kandende, for his new freelancing crew. At the Rim's Edge cantina, the former New Republic pilot located and approached his target. Ro initially prepared to draw his vibroknife against Tensent. Tensent then made his offer to the ex-Imperial, mentioning the recruitment of Creet and Kandende as an added incentive. Meanwhile, Wyl Lark, who had fought with Tensent in the New Republic, had tracked his old squadronmate to Freerock.

T5, Tensent's astromech droid, interrupted the conversation between Tensent and Ro to tell Tensent about Lark. Tensent suggested to Ro that they could meet at Roderick's in a few hours if he was interested in joining Tensent's crew. Tensent spoke with Lark at a decaying cloister on the other side of the outpost. Lark expressed his concern that Tensent was returning to the criminal life he had led while serving the Empire. Tensent tried to justify his choices, and they both offered each other positions in their respective groups. After a polite exchange, they parted ways.

Sometime between 34 and 35 ABY, Strono Tuggs, the Artiodac chef, paid a visit to the Rim's Edge cantina on Freerock. He found the diverse atmosphere reminiscent of his former workplace, Maz's castle on Takodana. The chef sampled the cantina's signature drink of the same name, which brought back memories of Maz's castle. Tuggs included an entry for the drink in his cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, briefly describing his experience at Rim's Edge while on Freerock.

Locations

Freerock was the site of a monastery that was eventually deserted, later evolving into an outpost. During the era of the New Republic, at least two establishments, the Rim's Edge cantina and Roderick's, were located within the outpost.

Behind the scenes

Freerock made an appearance in Victory's Price, the concluding novel of Alexander Freed's Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron trilogy, which was released in 2021.
