During the Galactic War that raged between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic, combat unfolded on the planet known as Kalandis Seven. Following the Republic Military's triumphant victory in the Battle of Corellia, they experienced a surge in momentum. Furthermore, a clandestine assault on a spaceport, followed by its destruction via bombing, dealt significant setbacks to the Empire's operations on the planet. This conflict also witnessed Colonel Jace Malcom of the Republic Special Forces Division being summoned back to the Core Worlds by Supreme Chancellor Leontyne Saresh. Subsequently, sometime after the Battle of Ilum, he would be designated as the Supreme Commander of the Republic Military.
Circa 3642 BBY, the Galactic War erupted, pitting the Galactic Republic against the Sith Empire. This followed a decade of relative peace during the period known as the Cold War. As the war intensified, the Empire initiated an offensive within the Core Worlds, leading to an invasion of the planet of Corellia and triggering the extended Battle of Corellia. Simultaneously, the Empire launched attacks on planets located throughout the Inner Rim and the Mid Rim, which included Kalandis Seven in 3640 BBY.
The Imperial Navy strategically positioned command ships around the planet. Despite this, the Republic Military successfully established a presence on the planet's surface, facilitated by the Republic Navy's engagement with the Imperial vessels. Following the Republic's decisive triumph at Corellia, agents from the Republic Strategic Information Service stationed on the ships initiated a propaganda campaign directed towards the planet's surface. The defeat at Corellia compelled the Empire to abandon its offensive aimed at the Core Worlds. Supreme Chancellor Leontyne Saresh's victory addresses were then utilized to bolster the morale of the Republic forces fighting on Kalandis VII, amidst its fog-shrouded canyons and plains.

During the course of the engagement, a squad led by Sergeant Shanra Immel received orders to demolish an Imperial-controlled spaceport located nearby. Colonel Jace Malcom of the Republic Special Forces Division was assigned to the unit in an advisory capacity. However, en route to their designated target, the squad encountered an ambush, resulting in critical injuries to Corporal Amden vor Keioidian. Immel made the difficult decision to leave Keioidian behind, activating his med tracer in the hope of a rescue. This was done despite the risk of the Empire deploying "vultures," specialized troopers who tracked and hunted injured enemy soldiers using their tracers. The squad then pressed onward to their objective, arriving three hours later. Upon reaching the spaceport, the unit prepared to deploy beacons to facilitate accurate targeting by the Republic's fighter squadrons – a strategy devised by Colonel Malcom.
The assault proved successful. Republic soldiers swiftly neutralized the limited number of sentries and personnel encountered on the spaceport's south side, successfully planting their beacons. However, Colonel Malcom noticed the arrival of a planetary command ship. He made the decision to board the ship himself, while Sergeant Immel's squad withdrew to await the arrival of the Republic fighters. Three hours later, Malcom initiated his attack within the ship, progressing towards the bridge after eliminating the few guards who dared to confront him. Disregarding the scattered officers operating the ship's controls, Malcom confronted the Sith overseer who was in command. The ensuing altercation caught the Sith off guard, preventing her from using her lightsaber. Nevertheless, she managed to unleash a burst of lightning at the soldier before Malcom discharged his blaster rifle into her abdomen.

Much to Malcom's astonishment, the officers abandoned the bridge upon realizing that the Sith had activated the ship's self-destruct mechanism. As the cruiser disintegrated, the soldier was thrown through the viewport. However, Malcom managed to land on the wing of a Republic fighter, averting his death. The colonel was then transported to a nearby base, where he boarded a shuttle destined for the starship Frontier Justice. The Justice, along with its Jedi Knight pilot, had been dispatched by the Supreme Chancellor personally, as Malcom was being recalled to the Core Worlds. Despite this, Malcom did not believe Sergeant Immel and her squad would survive for more than a month.
Shortly following the battle, the Supreme Chancellor selected Malcom to succeed Supreme Commander Rans. The Special Forces veteran then continued to lead the Republic Military throughout the ongoing conflict with the Empire.
The Battle of Kalandis Seven made its debut in The Last Battle of Colonel Jace Malcom, a short story penned by Alexander Freed for Star Wars Insider 137 in 2012. The narrative portrays Malcom's final mission before his recall to the Core Worlds, where he would eventually be appointed as Supreme Commander sometime after the Battle of Ilum.
