According to "The Tale of the Aiwha Pod," a story passed down through generations by the Kaminoans, a significant conflict occurred at the Ancient Trench. This involved the god-beast known as Protas, the same entity who had previously been victorious against Melkorr, and a vast group of swimming kikla. Their struggle lasted for a month, with the kikla attempting to overwhelm Protas through sheer force of numbers. However, Protas exploited the kikla's lack of a coordinated strategy, focusing on a singular approach and consuming them to sustain his strength. When the new moon appeared, Protas ended the lives of the remaining kikla, thus maintaining his dominion over the oceans of Kamino. Following this triumph, the god-beast became overly confident, leading him to challenge an aiwha group, who would bring about his end to ensure their own survival.
The Kaminoan people tell the tale of "The Tale of the Aiwha Pod," which was translated into Basic by Ryan Kaufman. This story recounts how Protas, a mighty and formidable deity, reigned supreme over the seas of the world of Kamino. He had emerged triumphant, slaying the dark titan Melkorr at the submerged ridge of Thalina, after Melkorr challenged him for control of the seas. The kikla, a small but aware race present in great numbers, yearned to rule Kamino's oceans. To achieve this ambition, they gathered as a military force, intending to overpower Protas through their overwhelming numbers.
When the kikla believed they possessed sufficient strength, they issued a challenge to Protas, initiating the conflict. Their struggle extended for more than a month, during which the kikla were convinced they could overcome the significantly larger god-beast through endurance and sheer numbers. However, the kikla were disorganized and lacked coordination in their attacks, utilizing their small, sharp teeth that could only inflict minor injuries. Conversely, Protas was focused and dispersed the kikla. He resorted to devouring them to replenish his energy, continuing this strategy until the last kikla was consumed as the new moon rose.
This triumph, in conjunction with his earlier victory over Melkorr, amplified Protas's arrogance. This hubris, in his later years, would ultimately lead to his downfall at the hands of a group of aiwha, whose passage to safer, warmer waters he had obstructed. The group, motivated by necessity rather than a desire for glory, would then govern the oceans and command the respect of all Kamino's inhabitants.
The battle at the Ancient Trench is depicted in Ryan Kaufman's short story entitled "The Tale of the Aiwha Pod," which was featured in Prima Games's 2005 official strategy guide for the Star Wars: Republic Commando game.
