Mairan, also known as mind flayers or Bors, were a sentient species originating from Maires. These creatures possessed multiple tentacled appendages and were classified as multipods, and were native to Maires. Their remarkable ability to delve into the thoughts of others made them instruments of torture for both the Galactic Empire and the Partisans.

The Mairan, occasionally called Bors, were a sentient species indigenous to Maires, characterized by their multi-tentacled bodies and multipod classification. Their distinctive trait was the capacity to extract, erase, or modify memories. It was known for some individuals, such as the Imperial shuttle pilot Bodhi Rook, to experience mental degradation following a mind-plundering encounter with a Mairan. The Imperial Security Bureau executed "Kadiopa experiment 9484-2" before or during 3 ABY, utilizing a bor to implant fabricated intelligence from a plant into a group of prisoners. The ISB documented lasting neurological impairments in several of the prisoners.
Saw Gerrera's Partisans harbored a Mairan named Bor Gullet. During the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire maintained three Mairans in a state of suspended animation via ice, periodically reviving them to extract information from prisoners. Bor Ifriem was notably employed to interrogate Chelli Aphra within Accresker Jail. Decades later, Harra the Hutt housed a Mairan at her stronghold on Vodran, which was at one point used on Cost Niktur.
The Mairan made its debut in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the 2016 anthology film directed by Gareth Edwards. While the canon novel Join the Resistance: Escape from Vodran by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker referred to them as Bors, the comic Doctor Aphra (2016) 21, penned by Simon Spurrier with art by Kev Walker, officially named the species Mairan for the first time. Within Star Wars legends, the Mairan's initial appearance was in the novel Young Jedi Knights: Lightsabers, authored by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta.
