Broonmark

A male Talz named Broonmark fought for the Galactic Republic, and later, the Sith Empire during the period known as the Cold War.

Biography

Early Life

Broonmark was born into a peaceful Talz clan on the frigid planet of Alzoc III, but he possessed a relentless desire for violence and death. In his youth, a wild beast killed Broonmark's father; Broonmark harbored resentment towards his father for failing to defeat the creature. As he became increasingly fascinated with death, a clan elder condemned his violent tendencies, leading Broonmark to execute the elder. To escape his clan and pursue paths of destruction, Broonmark joined the Galactic Republic military, where he received training and was deployed to Hoth during the Galactic War. As a brutal leader of the Talz Commandos, Broonmark spearheaded campaigns of widespread slaughter against the Sith Empire.

Joining the Emperor's Wrath

Broonmark meets the Sith in a cave on Hoth.

His brutal methods resulted in the disapproval of many of his comrades, and Lieutenant Fetzellen instigated a mutiny against his command. Evading their attacks, Broonmark sought refuge in a cave to devise a plan to eliminate his former squad members. Within that cave, the Jedi Padawan Sewlor sought shelter from the cold while searching for his Jedi Master Xerender. Aware of Broonmark's presence in the cave, Sewlor grew uneasy and was unable to defend himself when the Talz emerged and broke his neck. Following the Padawan's demise, Broonmark encountered and fought the apprentice of Darth Baras, the future Emperor's Wrath, with the duel ending inconclusively. After leaving the cave, Broonmark subsequently confronted and killed more of the traitors from his squad, encountering the Wrath in the process. Eventually, the Wrath located Xerender's position, which was guarded by Fetzellen himself. Broonmark soon arrived and demanded the opportunity to complete his vengeance by killing his former second-in-command, pledging his life to the Wrath in exchange; the Wrath agreed, and after confronting Fetzellen about his treachery, Broonmark battled and ultimately beat his mutinous lieutenant to death. From that point forward, the Wrath allowed Broonmark to accompany him as his personal assassin in his relentless pursuit of death.

During their travels together, Broonmark shared details about his past and his disdain for other Talz. The savage alien voiced his satisfaction as he and the Wrath decimated their enemies, eventually vowing complete loyalty and offering to train the Wrath's followers in the art of killing.

After the Eternal Empire launched its invasion of the galaxy, the Empire's Wrath disappeared during combat. Fearing the worst, Broonmark grieved for his friend, along with the rest of the crew before they all went their separate ways. Five years later, the smuggler Hylo Visz informed the Outlander, the leader of the clandestine Alliance against the Eternal Empire, about the location of a Wookiee Senator named Gryyzak on Alderaan to recruit him for the Alliance. However, upon arriving for the meeting, the Outlander discovered that Broonmark had tracked down the Senator and massacred his entire entourage, as Gryyzak had introduced "Wookiee customs" to the Talz, encouraging them to conceal what Broonmark believed to be his people's "true nature" in order to join the Republic.

Personality and traits

Despite originating from a peaceful Talz clan, Broonmark evolved into a savage being with an unquenchable thirst for carnage and bloodshed. He also viewed violence as a source of pride, considering it a solution to all problems. Despite his deep-seated aversion to his fellow Talz, Broonmark did not fault them for their peaceful, and in his opinion, passive ways; he believed that the ancient Talz possessed killer strength and instincts, and that the absence of these qualities in his contemporary Talz was due to the influence of the peaceful Republic. Consequently, seeing himself as the last Talz with the strength of his ancestors, Broonmark felt obligated to destroy the Republic for what he perceived as the pacification and enslavement of his species - an objective that aligned with the Empire's goals.

Broonmark's respect for the Sith Warrior grew over time. He admired the Wrath's capacity for violence, recognizing in the Wrath the strength, violent spirit, and destructive abilities that he believed the Talz had once possessed but lost. He sought the Sith's approval by emulating the warrior's example.

Broonmark possessed a strong sense of loyalty and admired the Wrath's protection of his companions, whom he accepted as his new clan; his experience of mutiny within his unit left the Talz highly sensitive to betrayal. Consequently, he was outraged by the duplicity of Darth Baras and Malavai Quinn, declaring that he must "cleanse the clan" of them, and when offered a position at Baras' side in exchange for abandoning the Wrath, Broonmark felt deeply insulted and refused.

Notably, Broonmark consistently referred to himself in the plural, using "we," "our," and "us." Similarly, he referred to his own species as "Talz clan" and the Wrath's companions as "Sith clan."

Skills and abilities

Broonmark was a skilled melee fighter proficient with the vibrosword and possessed great resilience. He was also equipped with a stealth generator, which he used to assassinate unsuspecting or fearful enemies, although he seemingly ceased using stealth after joining forces with the Emperor's Wrath.

Behind the scenes

Broonmark makes an appearance in Star Wars: The Old Republic: Knights of the Fallen Empire during the Broonmark Alliance alert mission. The sole method of recruiting Broonmark involves selecting a dark side option that allows him to kill Gryyzak; any attempts at negotiation are futile as long as the Wookiee remains alive. An exception exists for the Sith Warrior, who can successfully prevent Broonmark from killing the Senator. The Wrath has the option to recruit Broonmark as a companion and enlist Gryyzak's assistance in the fight against Arcann. If Gryyzak is killed during this encounter and Broonmark is recruited, Hylo will express her displeasure with the mission's outcome and pledge to keep Broonmark away from her and her smugglers on Odessen.
