Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance

The Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance constituted a Force-sensitive Lorrdian religious order. Their activities spanned from the days of the Republic Era until the Galactic Empire's imperial era of dominance.

Description

To counteract their naturally expressive physical behavior, most members of the Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance donned weighty vermilion robes and hoods, representing a tangible commitment to silence. Certain adherents would carry censers attached to staffs, filled with burning Qatameric incense. The smoke from these censers permeated their thick garments, masking their inherent odors. Consistent with the faith's emphasis on concealing individuality, some members even relinquished their given names. For instance, the High Priest was only addressed by his followers through a specific, mournful vocalization. Certain members, especially leaders of a congregation, donned Blue Gowns of the Sullen Moon along with Lorrdian Cowls of Quiescence. They showed a preference for a hybrid variation of the meiloorun fruit that had purple skin, as opposed to the typical orange-yellow ones.

History

Members of the Brotherhood respond to riots during the Battle of Jedha

Brotherhood members frequently embarked on spiritual pilgrimages to planets holding religious importance, for example, the Mid Rim desert moon known as Jedha. They also resided on Kijimi at one point. They coexisted within the ancient Kijimi City alongside the Dai Bendu monks, occupying the area that would eventually become the Thieves Quarter, until both monastic orders were ultimately forced out by criminals and thugs. Toshdor Ni, a member of the Brotherhood, participated in a group pilgrimage to Jedha in 1 BBY. He and his fellow devotees were present in the Holy City of the moon just before its destruction, which occurred during a test firing of the Death Star's superlaser.

Behind the scenes

The Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance was a religious group conceived for the 2016 Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The group drew clear inspiration from the Sisterhood of the Beatific Countenance, a Lorrdian-based religion (now classified as Legends) whose members wore similarly colored red robes.
