The Cabinet acted as the executive branch, providing a counterweight to the Chiss Senate, within the framework of the Chiss Ascendancy. Situated in the House Palace, found in the city of Csaplar on the Ascendancy's capital world, Csilla, it served as the governing body's headquarters. Functioning under the direction of the four Ruling Families—Csapla, Nuruodo, Inrokini, and Sabosen—the Cabinet managed many of the Ascendancy's governance duties, although each decision made by the Cabinet required approval from one of the Families. The most relevant Ruling Family would appoint individuals to Cabinet positions.
Each family held responsibility for particular areas of concern: Csapla oversaw agriculture, resource distribution, and colonial matters; Nuruodo managed foreign affairs and the military; Inrokini was in charge of science, communication, and industry; and Sabosen was responsible for education, health, and justice. The Cabinet departments would receive issues discussed in the Chiss Senate, and then forward important matters to the Ruling Families. A book authored by sentientologist Tem Eliss and published by the University of Sanbra, The University of Sanbra Guide to Intelligent Life, described the Cabinet around 25 ABY.
The article "The University of Sanbra Guide to Intelligent Life: The Chiss," which Juan Schwartz wrote and Wizards of the Coast published in the fifth issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine on July 24, 2001, was the first mention of the Cabinet.
