Plot summary

A new rival appears

At the Tenoo Jedi Temple, Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay, and Nubs are practicing lightsaber techniques with three additional Jedi Initiates. These include a Mirialan and two human girls with dark complexions, all under the guidance of Jedi Master Zia Zaldor Zanna. Master Zanna, visibly impressed, announces that they will engage in sparring matches that day. Brightstar expresses enthusiasm for sparring with Solay and Nubs. However, Master Zanna clarifies to Brightstar that he will instead spar with Djovi Resmia, suggesting that this will present a different sort of challenge.

Brightstar agrees to this arrangement. Resmia comments that Brightstar will make an excellent sparring partner. Zanna reminds them that sparring is not a competition, but rather a means to practice and assist one another in improving. She instructs the younglings to assume their positions and begin. Resmia ignites their yellow lightsaber, while Brightstar ignites his second lightsaber. After Kai initiates the first swing, Resmia immediately launches an aggressive offensive. Brightstar notices that Resmia is employing a fighting style that the initiates have not yet been taught.

Resmia points out that Master Zanna desired a challenge and that they enjoy challenges. Brightstar concurs and challenges Resmia to demonstrate further skills. Resmia and Brightstar engage in intense sparring, drawing the attention of both the other younglings and Master Zanna. Resmia gains an advantage over Brightstar, disarming him by knocking his lightsaber from his grasp. Master Zanna, showing concern, halts the sparring and dismisses the class.

An assignment of unique importance

Brightstar, at the Jedi Temple cafeteria, expresses his frustration at losing, inadvertently flinging a ball of paste onto Nubs' plate. He quickly apologizes, and Nubs accepts the apology, consuming the paste. Solay reassures Brightstar, pointing out that he didn't truly lose because Master Zanna stated it wasn't a competition. She praises his lightsaber skills and impressive forms. Brightstar is upset because he had considered himself the best student and was defeated.

Master Zanna requests a private conversation with Brightstar. Nubs finishes Brightstar's meal with Solay's consent. In private, Zanna addresses both Brightstar and Resmia. She acknowledges their display of excellent lightsaber skills and decides to assign them a special task. Using a holoprojector, Zanna explains that the massive Tenoo tree features glowing beacon stones that illuminate the rope bridge pathway. She entrusts the two younglings with the task of retrieving a damaged beacon stone for repair. The two initiates accept this challenge.

As they walk along the rope bridge path, they discuss the objectives of their mission. After Resmia inspects the first beacon stone, Brightstar suggests that the mission appears too straightforward. Resmia believes Master Zanna has her reasons. Brightstar pledges not to disappoint her and to demonstrate that he is the best Jedi for the task. Resmia observes that Brightstar is still preoccupied with their sparring match. When Brightstar inquires about how they learned to disarm him, Resmia declines to reveal the secret to their advantage.

Brightstar declares that he will not allow Resmia to defeat him again and vows to locate the beacon stone fire. Resmia disagrees and challenges Brightstar to a race. Brightstar accepts, but Resmia begins the race ahead of him. The two Younglings utilize their Force abilities to leap across the rope bridge and the branches of the giant Tenoo tree. They also use lassos to traverse exposed sections of the bridge system.

The race to secure the beacon stone

While pausing on a large branch, the two Younglings share their favorite masters. Resmia's preferred master is Avar Kriss, while Brightstar's is Yoda. Brightstar mentions that Yoda is 650 years old and believes he is the most skilled Jedi with the Force. Resmia counters that Master Kriss uses the Force to spin her lightsaber in mid-air. When Brightstar compliments Resmia's knowledge of Jedi Masters, Resmia reveals that they have studied them all and aspire to become the best Jedi Master possible. Brightstar agrees, citing the Jedi's dedication to helping those in need.

Brightstar tells Resmia that Yoda gifted him his training lightsaber. While Brightstar discusses his ambition to become a great Jedi, Resmia notices the damaged beacon stone above and retrieves it. When Brightstar realizes that Resmia has deceived him, Resmia challenges him to a race back to the Jedi Temple. As Resmia runs along the rope bridge, Brightstar uses the Force to leap over branches and catch up to Resmia. During the chase, Resmia accidentally drops the beacon stone from the rope bridge, causing it to fall to the forest floor below.

Resolving their differences

The two younglings place blame on each other for the loss of the beacon stone. Resmia is disheartened that they will be unable to impress Master Zanna. Brightstar suggests that Resmia has already impressed Zanna with their lightsaber combat skills. When he asks why they feel the need to impress her, Resmia reveals that they are envious of Brightstar for seemingly excelling at everything. Resmia believes that the only way they can improve is to train with Brightstar. Resmia notes that Master Zanna consistently recognizes Brightstar's greatness. Resmia admits that they aspire to be the best.

Brightstar responds that when Resmia defeated him, he briefly felt that he could never be a great Jedi simply because he wasn't the best at one particular thing. Brightstar suggests that being a great Jedi isn't always about winning, but also about maintaining control. The two Younglings offer apologies. Resmia admits that they tend to bring out the competitive nature in people, even outside of formal competitions. Extending an olive branch, Brightstar reminds Resmia of their shared mission to recover the beacon stone. Resmia agrees, stating that this is what a great Jedi would say.

Working together as a team

Upon reaching the forest floor, the two Younglings decide to use their lightsabers to search for the beacon stone. They locate the beacon stone, but Brightstar falls into a pit. Resmia jumps in after him, using their lightsaber to slow their descent while reaching out to Brightstar. Brightstar expresses his gratitude to Resmia for saving his life. They then spot the beacon stone, which is about to slip further down. Resmia's lightsaber is slipping, and they struggle to maintain their grip. They ask Brightstar for ideas.

Brightstar uses his lightsaber to secure himself against the wall of the pit before levitating the beacon stone. After passing it to Resmia, the two Younglings use their lightsabers as anchors as they climb upwards. Resmia passes the beacon stone to Brightstar. As they climb, using their lightsabers, they alternate passing the beacon stone to each other until they reach the top. Reaching the top, they share a laugh of joy and relief. The two Younglings decide to return the beacon stone to the Temple together.

Back at the Temple, Brightstar credits Resmia with saving his life. Resmia, in turn, credits Brightstar with recovering the beacon stone. Master Zanna expresses her pride in the two younglings' ability to collaborate on the mission. She states that, like the beacon stone, each of them possesses an inner light. Zanna draws her lightsaber and scrapes the beacon stone several times, restoring its shine. As Jedi, they must assist one another in finding that light so that they can share it with others. Zanna acknowledges that they have both learned this lesson. She invites them to return the beacon stone to its designated place. The two younglings happily accept the mission.
