Dec Hansen, a male human scavenger, hailed from Ques, a planet characterized by swamp terrain located within Hutt Space. Being an only child, Hansen had a droid "brother" constructed for him by his mother: the AG-90. Growing up alongside AG, Hansen eventually joined the Resistance with his droid companion, both serving as cadets within J-Squadron fighting against the First Order. At the Resistance base situated on D'Qar, Hansen gained a reputation for causing trouble, which led to him and several other J-Squadron members being assigned to a mission to Vodran for scavenging purposes as a form of punishment in 34 ABY. During this mission, Hansen and fellow cadet Sari Nadle were separated from the group due to an attack by Vodran's native fauna, forcing them to escape the planet.
Ben Blacker, a co-author of Star Wars: Join the Resistance, confirmed via Twitter that Dec's intended sexual orientation was gay, marking him as the first gay character to appear in a Star Wars children's book. This aspect of his character was hinted at throughout the series, although it was never explicitly stated. In the second installment, Join the Resistance: Escape from Vodran, Dec shared with Harra the Hutt a narrative about his anxieties surrounding rejection after coming to terms with his sexuality, detailing how he confided in his brother and parents, yet he only referred to it as "the thing that made me different from everyone else," without specifying the nature of that difference. Dec's sexuality was once again implied in Join the Resistance: Attack on Starkiller Base when his close friend Sari confessed to Mattis Banz that she harbored feelings for Dec. When Mattis inquired if she believed Dec reciprocated her feelings, Sari responded with, "I've never known him to like a girl. It's just not how he is."
