Devaronian Soufflé

This tangy soufflé, known as Devaronian Soufflé, was a celebrated dish, infamous for its potential to explode during preparation. The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs personally witnessed Devaronian cook Sama Macoy trigger such an event at Takodana Castle on the planet Takodana. Many centuries later, specifically in 34 ABY, he immortalized this story alongside his recipe for the dish within the pages of his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.

Description

The Devaronian Soufflé was a recognized classic baked dish, characterized by its tangy taste. However, what truly set it apart from other soufflés was its tendency to explode. Unlike most chefs, who typically worried about their soufflés collapsing, those preparing this Devaronian specialty had to be extremely careful to stir the batter at the correct speed, or else it could detonate. Despite its volatile preparation, the final product was edible for both Devaronians and Artiodacs.

History

Strono Tuggs, cookbook author and witness to the explosion of a Devaronian Soufflé

Strono Tuggs, an Artiodac, served as the head chef for Maz Kanata at the tavern located within her castle on the planet Takodana. This was in the centuries leading up to the destruction of the castle in 34 ABY. After dedicating over twenty years to this role, Tuggs organized a cooking competition to find a replacement for his deceased sous-chef, Robbs Ely. The contestants were unaware that Tuggs was also trying to identify Ely's murderer and the thief of his recipe book. During one challenging round, where competitors had to avoid stun blasts, the Devaronian prep cook Sama Macoy began preparing her soufflé while struggling with the effects of being stunned. Her inability to maintain consistent motion in the unstable batter resulted in an explosion that covered her face.

While everyone present escaped injury, the batter explosion forced Macoy to restart with a different dish. The judges, Carly and J'Nell, who were BD-3000 luxury droids, were not impressed when the Devaronian attributed the explosion to the ingredients rather than her own lack of skill. This incident eliminated her from both the competition and the list of suspects in Ely's murder, which was ultimately committed by the droids.

Decades later, in 34 ABY, Tuggs shared the story of Macoy, along with a recipe for the soufflé, in his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook. This publication occurred after the destruction of Takodana Castle. He expressed his hope that those who attempted his recipe would have better luck than Macoy. However, he also suggested fried zuchii as a quick and easy substitute if an unexpected detonation occurred.

Behind the scenes

The first appearance of Devaronian Soufflé was in the short story "A Recipe for Death," penned by Landry Q. Walker and featured in the 2016 anthology Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens: Volume I. The out-of-universe recipe was specifically developed for the 2019 cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, authored by Marc Sumerak and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel. This cookbook classifies the soufflé as suitable for both vegetarian and gluten-free diets. The required ingredients include butter for greasing, sugar for the batter and dusting, four separated large eggs, a pinch of salt, softened cream cheese, crumbled goat cheese, lemon juice and zest, and paprika.
