Duke (pilot)

Duke was a male human who served the Alliance to Restore the Republic as a pilot. During the Attack on Lothal, he operated under the callsign Phoenix Five. In his attempt to penetrate the blockade, Duke met his end when Imperial Commander Vult Skerris, flying his TIE/D Defender Elite, shot him down, resulting in his death.

Biography

During the Imperial Era, Duke was a pilot of the Rebel Alliance's T-65B X-wing starfighter. In 1 BBY, he participated in General Hera Syndulla's team tasked with destroying the Imperial Armory Complex and the nearby fuel depot located on Lothal. This operation was part of Syndulla's strategy to disrupt the production of Grand Admiral Thrawn's TIE/d "Defender" Multi-Role Starfighter. Duke's callsign during the attack was Phoenix Five, and he flew alongside Cleat, whose callsign was Phoenix Four.

Following the strike team's arrival from hyperspace, they encountered Thrawn's 7th Fleet, prompting Hera to instruct Phoenix Five and Phoenix Four to reduce the number of incoming TIE fighters. Duke and Cleat followed Hera's orders. When Cleat urged him to keep pace, Duke confirmed. As they engaged the TIE fighters, Vult Skerris, an ace Imperial pilot, entered the battle in his TIE/D Defender Elite, positioning himself behind Duke's X-wing. Despite Cleat's warning, Skerris managed to shoot down Duke's fighter, causing his death. Skerris then proceeded to eliminate Cleat before Syndulla neutralized him.

Thrawn's formidable TIE fighter defense resulted in the annihilation of General Syndulla's strike team, with Hera herself being captured. However, Duke's sacrifice proved valuable, as the Spectres later achieved success in shutting down TIE Defender production on Lothal when Governor Arihnda Pryce targeted the Lothal City fuel depot in an attempt to eliminate the rebel group.

Personality and traits

Duke was a light-skinned human male. He was a Rebel Alliance T-65B X-wing starfighter pilot who demonstrated formation flying skills and the ability to shoot down TIE fighters while working with his wingmate Cleat. However, the Imperial ace pilot Vult Skerris, piloting his TIE/D Defender Elite, proved to be a superior opponent.

Behind the scenes

Duke made his debut in "Rebel Assault," the ninth episode of Star Wars Rebels' fourth season. Freddie Prinze Jr., who also voices Kanan Jarrus, provided his voice. His animation model is the same as Gold Four's from "Secret Cargo."
