A clash occurred in 231 BBY on the Outer Rim world of Carlac; the Galactic Republic's Republic Defense Coalition faced off against Nihil marauders. This battle, a component of Operation Counterstrike—the Jedi Order and Republic's reaction to the Nihil's assault on Valo during the Valo Republic Fair—resulted in a win for the Republic, with numerous pirates being seized as captives.
Subsequently, the captured pirates were transported to the space station Starlight Beacon and incarcerated there. Later that year, Avar Kriss, the Jedi marshal overseeing Starlight, referenced the Republic's conflict with the Nihil on Carlac during a Starlight briefing intended to update defense coalition members and Jedi on Operation Counterstrike's progress, shortly preceding the Battle of Galov.
The Carlac confrontation appeared in flashbacks within The High Republic: Tempest Runner, a 2021 audio play penned by Cavan Scott and released as part of Phase I of the Star Wars: The High Republic cross-media initiative.
