Carlac, situated in the Outer Rim Territories, was a tranquil planet blanketed in snow. During the time of the Clone Wars, a town was inhabited by individuals from the Ming Po culture. However, the radical Mandalorian terrorist organization known as Death Watch reduced that village to ashes in a burning.
Located within the Outer Rim Territories, Carlac was a planet characterized by its snowy landscape. Forests and mountains covered its terrain, and humans could breathe in its atmosphere. The planet experienced a frigid climate.
During 231 BBY, Carlac served as the location for a battle that was part of Operation: Counterstrike during the conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Nihil. After being captured on Carlac, several Nihil marauders were interrogated, revealing to the Jedi that the Nihil were structured into three Tempests and commanded by Tempest Runners, individuals who held considerable independent power within the group. These responses reinforced the Republic and Jedi's incorrect assumption that Lourna Dee was the Eye of the Nihil.

In 132 BBY, the Republic prison transport named Palwick met its end on Carlac after its prisoners disabled the ship's pilot droids and absconded with its escape pods. Osha Aniseya, a meknek and former Padawan who was accused of murdering a Jedi Master, was the sole remaining prisoner. While present on Carlac, she experienced a vision of her twin sister, Mae, who confessed to the Jedi's death. Osha shared this revelation when she was later confronted by Jedi investigators on a rocky cliff. Master Sol, their leader, gave credence to Aniseya's account and permitted her to freely board their Polan-717 Jedi transport.

During the Clone Wars between the Republic and the secessionist Confederacy of Independent Systems, Carlac contained a camp belonging to the Mandalorian terrorist group Death Watch. In the year 20 BBY, Ahsoka Tano, a Jedi Padawan, journeyed to Carlac alongside her friend Lux Bonteri, who secretly intended to join Death Watch to exact vengeance on Count Dooku for his mother's demise. Upon arriving at the Death Watch camp, Bonteri and Tano discovered Ming Po individuals enslaved by Death Watch. Pieter, the Chieftain of the nearby Ming Po Town, interrupted a celebration, demanding that Death Watch return the women they had enslaved. Pre Vizsla, the leader of Death Watch, consented to this demand.

Upon reaching the town, Vizsla murdered Pieter's granddaughter in his presence and commanded his soldiers to set the village ablaze. Tano revealed her Jedi identity, attempting to defend the village, but was ultimately captured. Bonteri realized the terrorist nature of Death Watch when Tano's execution was ordered for her alleged transgressions against Mandalore. However, R2-D2 rescued the pair, and they fled aboard the Phoenix.
During the Galactic Civil War that followed the establishment of the Galactic Empire, the Force spirit of the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi informed his apprentice Luke Skywalker that the destiny of Carlac, along with numerous other planets, hinged on his confrontation with the Sith Lord Darth Vader during the Battle of Endor.
The occupation of Carlac by Death Watch was mentioned in "Mandalorians Through the Ages," a work by the historian Eloc Throno.
Carlac made its debut in "A Friend in Need," an episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars that was originally broadcast on January 13, 2012.
