Official description

The following is the official description: "A peace conference between Separatists and Republic delegates is interrupted by Lux Bonteri, the son of a late Separatist Senator, who involves Ahsoka in his dangerous search to find justice for his mother's death."

Plot summary

The initial assembly of representatives from both factions unfolds within the throne room of Duchess Satine Kryze. Padmé Amidala, accompanied by Ahsoka, Senators Bail Organa, and Mon Mothma, as well as R2-D2, finds herself in a challenging position, striving to negotiate terms agreeable to all parties involved. The Separatists, primarily represented by Voe Atell, insist on the validation of their government before any progress toward peace can be achieved. Unexpectedly, Lux Bonteri, now a junior senator, makes an entrance into the throne room. With the Duchess's consent, he delivers a bitter accusation against Count Dooku, implicating him in the assassination of his mother. The Separatist delegates promptly remove him from the premises. Concerned that he might face execution for speaking out, Padmé dispatches Ahsoka to pursue Lux.

Lux is escorted to the vessel that transported the Separatist delegation to Mandalore. Before a holographic projection of Count Dooku, the Count denies any involvement in Mina's death and orders Lux to be executed for treason. At the critical moment, Ahsoka intervenes, saving Lux. Despite being without her lightsabers due to the ongoing negotiations, she fights her way through the ship's droid crew and utilizes the Republic delegate transport to flee the planet. However, as Ahsoka intends to bring Lux to Coruscant for amnesty, Lux brandishes a blaster, stating that while he has abandoned the Separatist cause, he will not align with the Republic either. Instead, he will pursue a different path. He reveals that he has contacted a "group" situated on Carlac and joined their cause to seek revenge on Dooku. Ahsoka remains determined to bring him to Republic territory, but Lux stuns her and seizes control of the ship. Ahsoka awakens inside the ship on the frigid surface of Carlac, without her lightsabers. Noticing Lux outside, she joins him and encounters the organization he has allied with: Death Watch. When Bo-Katan Kryze, the leader of the welcoming party, inquires about Ahsoka's identity, she quickly identifies herself as Lux's fiancée. Despite hopes to the contrary, she and R2, who has located Ahsoka's hidden lightsabers, are taken to a Death Watch outpost to meet their leader. Once alone, Lux explains his plan to Ahsoka: He intentionally accused Dooku to trace his current location once the Count contacted him via hologram. Now, he intends to lead the Death Watch, who have apparently had a disagreement with Dooku, to the Count to assassinate him. When Ahsoka passionately begins to highlight the true nature of Death Watch to Lux, Pre Vizsla, the Death Watch leader, arrives. To prevent Ahsoka from revealing their situation, Lux embraces and kisses her. Ahsoka is then asked to leave the tent, and Lux hands over the holotracer's information.

Meanwhile, R2 is enlisted by the Death Watch to repair their battle droids, which they use for target practice and cruel sport. Ahsoka is assigned to work with young female natives held as slaves by the Death Watch. That night, during a Death Watch celebration, Pieter, the chieftain of the nearby village and grandfather of Tryla, one of the slaves, demands the return of the captives and the Death Watch's departure from Carlac the following morning. The Death Watch brings the women to the village, but after surrendering Tryla to her grandfather, Vizsla draws his Darksaber and kills Tryla. He then orders the village to be set ablaze. Ahsoka confronts the Mandalorians but is quickly captured.

However, R2, having finished repairing the Death Watch droids, witnesses Ahsoka in captivity and convinces his new allies to help free her. Vizsla prepares to execute Ahsoka, but R2 creates a diversion, frees Ahsoka, and returns her lightsabers, enabling her to fight Vizsla. She and Lux are soon joined by the droids, who distract the Mandalorians while Ahsoka and Lux escape on a speeder. Despite being pursued and attacked by Bo-Katan and two of her men, Ahsoka and Lux return to the ship, take off, and escape the planet. As the ship heads for Coruscant, Ahsoka discovers that Lux is about to leave in an escape pod. Unable to dissuade him, she promises to meet again as Lux launches the pod, leaving Ahsoka behind.

Continuity

According to Series Writer Brent Friedman, "A Friend in Need" was initially conceived as part of a more extensive narrative arc that included the episodes "An Old Friend," "The Rise of Clovis," and "Crisis at the Heart." However, the arc was later divided, with the latter three episodes being completed at a later stage in the series' production.
