Opening crawl

Plot summary

Following the Battle of Yavin, the Heroes of Yavin are celebrating their victory inside the Millennium Falcon despite C-3PO's reservations. He fears they are not out of danger. Subsequently, the rebels find themselves pursued by a squadron of TIE fighters and an Imperial Star Destroyer, commanded by Darth Vader himself. Vader proclaims, "You'll never escape me now!". An officer assures Vader that they cannot hear him, prompting Vader to use Force chokes on the officer. Luke pilots the Falcon across the bridge of Vader's Star Destroyer, initiating a chase that results in the warship flipping upside down. Luke attempts to jump the Falcon into hyperspace but instead attracts more TIE fighters.

On Dagobah, Jedi Masters Yoda and the Force ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi perceive that Luke is too impetuous and unprepared to commence his training. Consequently, the two Jedi decide to uncover the holocrons they have concealed. This leads to a flashback depicting the Jedi's efforts to retrieve the holocrons from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant after the Great Jedi Purge. After Kenobi delivered the infant Luke to his uncle Owen Lars on Tatooine, Yoda was disappointed to learn that Kenobi had failed to evacuate the Temple's holocrons during their escape. He emphasizes the necessity of the holocrons for Luke's training and instructs Senator Bail Prestor Organa and Kenobi to meet him on Kashyyyk. Before departing, Kenobi evades a group of Tusken Raiders riding banthas by seizing Jabba's sail barge.

In the Chancellor's Suite, Emperor Palpatine plays The Imperial March on a CD player during a meeting with several senators. Palpatine is irritated when the Gran Senator Ask Aak begins booing and attacks him with Force lightning. However, he is appeased when Ask Aak explains that booing signifies cheering on his home planet. With the Jedi eliminated, he cautions the Senators that anyone who opposes him will face the wrath of his apprentice, Darth Vader. Vader stumbles, as he is not accustomed to his new prosthetic limbs. When the Senators laugh, he uses the Force to choke them.

On Kashyyyk, the Jedi and Senator Organa convene. While Organa advises against exposing themselves to the Sith, Yoda is determined to retrieve the holocrons to begin training Luke. Organa is accompanied by a gun-wielding C-3PO and R2-D2, with C-3PO displaying a macho demeanor. The Jedi and Organa are further supported by a strike team composed of surviving Padawans, the Force-sensitive Clone trooper Jek-14, and the Ithorian Jedi Knight Noga-ta, a former classmate of Kenobi.

The Jedi strike team journeys to Coruscant. Kenobi and Yoda remain behind to oversee the mission from Yoda's escape pod with R2-D2. The strike team, including 3PO, lands in the Jedi Temple, and the Jedi proceed to the Holocron Vaults. Meanwhile, an oblivious Palpatine is watching television and eating popcorn. Against Senator Organa's advice, 3PO engages the 501st Legion, drawing the attention of the Emperor and Vader. 3PO manages to incapacitate several of the Emperor's Royal Guard by toppling statues onto them.

The Padawans and Jek-14 help themselves to the holocrons but are hindered by a librarian droid. Jek-14 shoots the droid. Elsewhere, C-3PO confronts Darth Vader, only to lose his courage when Vader reveals that he is merely a protocol droid. Vader quickly realizes that the Jedi are after the holocrons and rushes to confront them. 3PO and Organa flee Palpatine and his Royal Guards. Vader intercepts the Padawans and Jek-14 before they can collect the last of the holocrons. Vader uses the Force to tear off Jek-14's arm and Force-chokes his former friend Noga-ta before throwing him to the ground.

The Nautolan Padawan tells Anakin they are not afraid, only for Vader to tell them that his name is Darth Vader. Vader engages the Padawans in a lightsaber duel. While Kenobi is concerned, Yoda insists that they must allow the Padawans to learn and not treat them like children. Eventually, Vader manages to knock the Padawans to the ground and Force-choke them. Unnoticed, Noga-Ta returns Jek-14's cybernetic arm to the Clone trooper. Before Vader can kill the Padawans, he is distracted by a holoprojection of Master Kenobi, who taunts him. However, this turns out to be a trap set by the Togruta Jedi, who lures Vader into a sealed room. The Jedi then escape with the holocrons.

Organa and C-3PO escape on a starship. The Jedi also escape on cloaked speeders before Vader and his stormtroopers can catch them and their valuable cargo. In space, the Jedi Padawans reunite with Masters Kenobi, Yoda, and C-3PO, and together they flee offworld. However, they are pursued by several TIE fighters led by Darth Vader. The Imperial TIEs open fire on the fleeing Jedi, causing several of the holocrons to fall into Coruscant's orbit. One strikes the Duros bounty hunter Cad Bane, while the other destroys the sign outside Lando Calrissian's "Millennium Falcon Night Club."

Vader is about to destroy the fleeing Jedi ships when Senator Organa and 3PO swing their starship into the TIE fighters. Vader descends into Coruscant's orbit while the Jedi celebrate their victory and thank C-3PO and Bail Organa for saving the day. 3PO pleads with Bail not to subject him to another memory wipe. Kenobi buries the holocrons beneath the sands of Tatooine and shapes the skeleton of a krayt dragon into a landmark. Returning to the present, Yoda reflects on the importance of assisting young Jedi by allowing them to learn on their own. He then instructs Kenobi's Force ghost to inform Luke about the holocrons.

The Millennium Falcon is being chased by Vader's TIE fighters. The Sith Lord is piloting his personal TIE Advanced fighter. When Princess Leia complains about Han Solo's piloting skills, he reminds her that her "boyfriend" got them into this predicament. Leia retorts that Luke is not her boyfriend. 3PO comforts a disheartened Luke, assuring him that he will always be his hero. At that moment, Luke is contacted by the Force ghost of Kenobi. However, Skywalker is startled by Kenobi's apparition and accidentally causes the Falcon to jump into hyperspace. While Han is annoyed, Luke manages to pull the freighter out of hyperspace just before it collides with the planet Naboo.

Darth Vader is not as fortunate, as Kenobi startles him into crashing his TIE Advanced fighter on Naboo. There, Vader is greeted by Jar Jar Binks and his children Jay Jay, Jee Jee, and Jo Jo. The Gungans embrace and play with an embarrassed Vader, who remarks that he will not be documenting this day in his personal journal. While recounting his recent experiences to his companions, Luke admits that he requires assistance to defeat Vader. Back on Dagobah, Yoda interprets this as a sign that Luke is willing to accept guidance. Yoda, Luke, and Vader then sense through the Force that the holocrons are calling out to them from beneath the sands of Tatooine. Several Jawas also observe the holocrons glowing beneath the sands.
