Friendship motif

A friendship motif, composed by John Williams, was part of the musical score for the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker](/article/star_wars:_episode_ix_the_rise_of_skywalker). This leitmotif is present alongside the victory motif within the track titled The Rise of Skywalker found on the movie's soundtrack; both of these musical themes are written in a major key. You can hear the friendship motif in the tracks "The Rise of Skywalker" and "To Kijimi." The 2020 production of The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, featuring a score by Michael Kramer, also incorporates this motif. In the opening scene, as Yoda begins his narration, Williams' friendship motif is blended with Kramer's newly created connection motif. The connection motif symbolizes the bonds formed between sentients, the celebration of life itself (Life Day), and the key that allowed for travel across time and space. When played together, the connection motif comes before the friendship motif. These two motifs are played when Rey Skywalker expresses her desire to go to Kordoku to assist in the training of her friend, Finn. They are also played when Jedi Master Yoda instructs Rey Skywalker to remember her connections with others, showing visions of the past of a master and an apprentice who are not only learning about the Force, but are also friends – the most important thing. The two motifs are heard again when Rey Skywalker opens a portal through time and space without the key, and once more when Rey Skywalker and Luke Skywalker separate on the second Death Star after defeating the Sith by following the Jedi tenet of letting go. Finally, the two motifs are combined in the Holiday Special's closing scene as Yoda narrates that Life Day is a time for joy, friendship, and family, as everyone gathers in a circle on day of life, before the end credits roll. LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation, another project scored by Michael Kramer, and released in 2022, also makes use of the friendship motif. It initially appears during a scene where Finn reminds all of his friends that their summer vacation will be their last time together. Subsequently, the motif is played whenever Finn attempts to converse with his friends and during his interactions with the Force spirits of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Leia Organa. The most significant use of the motif occurs during Finn's recollection of his initial encounters with Poe, Rey, and Rose, and the profound meanings they brought to his life. Following this, the friends share a group hug as all the Force spirits from throughout the episode appear.
