The Galactic Senate Chamber, alternatively called the Grand Convocation Chamber, Senate Rotunda, grand audience chamber, or simply the Senate Chamber, was a sizable, open space located within the Galactic Senate Building on the planet Coruscant. This chamber served as the meeting place for the Galactic Senate of the Galactic Republic and acted as the primary hub for political affairs.
It featured 1,024 repulsorpods intended for use by senators and representatives from various political groups. Some delegations, such as the Naboo delegation, possessed their own dedicated pod, while others were required to share. These platforms were capable of detaching from the chamber walls, which were equipped with voice amplification systems, translation devices, and hovercams used to record the proceedings. Positioned at the chamber's center was the Chancellor's podium, an extension of the Chancellery Secretariat's "working office," from which the Supreme Chancellor and Vice Chair presided over Senate meetings.
During the Clone Wars, following the Infiltrator demolition droids blow up of Coruscant's central power distribution grid, a mandatory blackout occurred, disrupting even the vote on the bill aimed at deregulating banking conglomerates. Consequently, the repulsorpods and the chamber switched to emergency power.
Within the Galactic Senate Chamber, Chancellor Sheev Palpatine announced the establishment of the Galactic Empire, declaring himself emperor before the newly designated Imperial Senate. Many repulsorpods sustained damage later when Sidious and Jedi Master Yoda hurled them at one another during their duel.
In the early years of the Imperial Era, the podium underwent a transformation, replacing the senate symbol with the Imperial crest. Furthermore, during the Imperial Era, the Republic symbol at the podium's base was replaced with the Imperial crest, and the repulsorpods were modified to incorporate the Imperial crest.
