Garu

Garu, a male humanoid Dark Lord of the Sith, existed as part of the ancient Sith Empire during its twilight years, participating in the destructive Great Hyperspace War. This warlord controlled the planet Korriz, and was a rival to another Sith Lord, the Patron.

Garu tasked Tritos Nal, a master in both Sith magic and alchemy, with forging a powerful Sith sword for his use. However, this weapon, which would become known as Garu's Warblade, was pilfered by agents working for Garu's adversary, the Sith Lord called the Patron. In 5000 BBY, Garu dispatched a small battle fleet in an attempt to seize the Starbreaker 12, a scout ship belonging to the Galactic Republic that was discovered within Sith territory. Once again, the Patron's operatives intervened, thwarting Garu's efforts to acquire the vessel. Garu was among the last Sith Lords known to possess the Holocron of King Adas; however, when Garu met his death on Ashas Ree during the Great Hyperspace War, which led to the Empire's demise in 5000 BBY, the holocron vanished. Eventually, Garu's Warblade was shattered, and its fragments were scattered throughout the Esstran sector by the time of the Cold War that occurred between the Galactic Republic and the reconstituted Empire.

During the New Sith Wars, Seviss Vaa, a member of the Brotherhood of Darkness, researched the worlds of the Sith Empire. In his recordings within the Telos Holocron, he claimed that Garu either lost or abandoned King Adas's holocron shortly before the Great Hyperspace War. Later, the holocron's contents were published as part of Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force, a compendium written by the Jedi Master Tionne Solusar in 40 ABY.

Long after his demise, the abomination Zeta Magnus adopted the alias Saturna of Garu, a reference to the long-deceased Sith Lord. Halagad Ventor, a Jedi Padawan, noticed the connection in names, leading him to believe that the title had an influence on the Dantari legend of a shaman known as Garoo on Dantooine.

Behind the scenes

Garu was initially referenced in The Dark Side Sourcebook, a roleplaying supplement from 2001 by Bill Slavicsek and J.D. Wiker. The 2007 reference book Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force presents conflicting information regarding when Garu lost the Holocron of King Adas, stating both after the fall of the Sith Empire and shortly before the Great Hyperspace War. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, a reference book from 2008, confirmed that Garu lost the holocron and died during the Great Hyperspace War. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia also incorrectly states that Garu was a Dark Lord of the Sith, or Jen'ari.
