The Sarlacc Pit, more formally known as the Great Pit of Carkoon, was a sizable depression in the sandy terrain of the Dune Sea. This geographical feature was situated on Tatooine, a planet characterized by its desert environment. The pit served as the habitat for the "almighty Sarlacc," a unique example of a sarlacc that, despite its nature, did not welcome the forced feeding of sentient beings. Similar to other sarlaccs, its digestive process could extend across thousands of years. Given its nearness to the palace of Jabba the Hutt, the crime lord employed the pit and the resident sarlacc as a means of carrying out agonizing torturous executions. The rescue of Han Solo transpired at this very pit, occurring shortly before the Battle of Endor. Adjacent to the Great Pit of Carkoon, Leia Organa brought about Jabba's demise aboard the Khetanna. Subsequently, both the pit and its sarlacc tenant met their end when Fennec Shand deployed a Seismic charges from Slave I directly into the pit.
The sarlacc's audio presence was achieved by blending alligator hisses with recordings of the stomachs of some of the Return of the Jedi production team after they had consumed pizza.
