GT-9R, who was given the nickname Niner by the individuals he served, was a protocol droid. He found himself in the service of two separate bounty hunters, specifically Tirog and Thannik, during the era of the Galactic Civil War. Despite being programmed for non-combat situations and possessing a clear aversion to the less refined aspects of existence, GT-9R accompanied his masters on numerous escapades. GT-9R was present with Tirog during a number of events, such as a tense exchange with Imperial Governor Dermeg of Ansillivog, a gunfight aboard Gettiarn Space Station, and a secret rendezvous within the Dancing Dewback cantina. GT-9R also became a target for Tirog's adversaries, including the crime lord Ploovo Two-For-One. Furthermore, "Niner" was a member of Thannik's group when they engaged in a smuggling operation that supplied weapons to the Alliance to Restore the Republic, as well as during Thannik's personal visit to the Dancing Dewback.
While in Tirog's service, GT-9R's programming as a non-violent protocol droid, along with his somewhat haughty disposition, often conflicted with the more forceful approach of the hunter. For instance, on one occasion, three armed security personnel at Gettiarn Space Station demanded that Tirog surrender. Even as Tirog opened fire on one of the guards, GT-9R suggested attempting a negotiated settlement. In a separate instance, the pair visited a cantina known as the Dancing Dewback to meet with a Devaronian contact; GT-9R expressed his disapproval of the establishment, while Tirog characterized it as "[his] kind of place." However, GT-9R did demonstrate a shared trait with his master: both the hunter and his droid hesitated before entering, carefully scanning the crowd for potential threats.
GT-9R was also on hand during Tirog's confrontation with Imperial Governor Dermeg of Ansillivog, and he was targeted alongside Tirog by loan shark and crime lord Ploovo Two-For-One. The gangster attempted to set a trap for GT-9R and Tirog, but the droid played a role in his master's capture of two of Ploovo's operatives. As a result, GT-9R and Tirog gained advance warning about the impending trap.
Alongside a pirate by the name of Drebble and a young individual who went by the name of "Ace," Tirog and GT-9R once paid a visit to an open-air marketplace on a world illuminated by a bright blue sun. During this visit, the group was confronted by a gambler accompanied by a pair of armed thugs, who had been pursuing them for some time. As the gambler and his associates opened fire on the group of four, GT-9R sought refuge in the nearby bar where Ace had already taken cover.
GT-9R also made an appearance at the Dancing Dewback alongside Thannik, the outlaw Dirk Harkness, a child named Cev Rees, and a pilot known as Rhen. GT-9R's conversation with Thannik upon entering the cantina closely mirrored his conversation with Tirog during their earlier visit.
Thannik and GT-9R shared another adventure that also involved Rhen and Rees. During the Galactic Civil War, the four individuals became entangled in a plot to smuggle blasters to the Rebel Alliance. Over the course of this scheme, the group was pursued by individuals who claimed that Thannik and his companions owed them credits. Their pursuers eventually caught up with them in an open-air market located on a world bathed in the light of a blue sun. While Thannik engaged their attackers in combat, GT-9R, along with Rees and Rhen, sought shelter in a nearby bar, only to find themselves surrounded by more armed individuals.
In contrast to his rugged masters, Tirog and Thannik, GT-9R had no fondness for combat situations. Furthermore, his programming prevented him from utilizing weapons, rendering him an ineffective combatant in any case. His typical response to combat was to immediately seek cover, often while continuing to advocate for peaceful resolutions. GT-9R consistently maintained a refined demeanor, even in the midst of battle. His personality often came across as snobbish, particularly when interacting with the less savory characters of the galaxy with whom his masters regularly associated.
GT-9R, in conjunction with Tirog, Drebble, and Ace, is among the characters featured in "Tirog's Story," which is a collection of gameplay examples found in Bill Smith's 1992 role-playing game book, Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Second Edition, published by West End Games. In "Tirog's Story," the player controlling Niner is identified as "Ted." Additional adventures of GT-9R with Tirog are presented in Appendix One of the rulebook, titled "Roleplaying Basics."
GT-9R's adventures with Thannik are showcased in two gameplay examples included in Smith's 1996 game book, Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Second Edition, Revised and Expanded. These examples are reworked and expanded versions of the earlier rulebook's depiction of the visit to the Dancing Dewback and the shootout in the marketplace, but with Thannik replacing Tirog and the addition of several other player characters. The player controlling GT-9R in the revised rulebook is identified as "Paul."
