The Harbor-class Mobile Space Dock functioned as a mobile drydock and repair facility, categorized as a space station. It saw action during the Imperial Era, utilized by both the forces of the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. Its mobile nature made it a rare asset; the Imperial Navy possessed only a limited number, while the Alliance Fleet had just two: the Sanctum and the recently acquired Imperial vessel, Reserve.
The Harbor-class Mobile Space Dock, a mobile shipyard space station, originated from Rendili StarDrive. Its primary function was to serve as a mobile drydock and starship maintenance hub. In terms of physical appearance, the Harbor-class was noted for its slender, towering structure, more akin to a skyscraper than a typical starship. Protruding from its central vertical hull were numerous lengthy docking arms, each equipped with multiple ports. Substantial horizontal support structures also extended from the main hull, facilitating drydock operations. The Harbor-class Mobile Space Dock also incorporated a superstructure, resembling a city, that rose above the docking facilities. This superstructure accommodated the station's crew, passengers, and essential support systems. Each docking facility could service starships ranging in size from frigate to cruiser, up to a silhouette 6 classification. The station provided living quarters for a large number of technicians, along with workshops, fabrication labs, research facilities, and other resources necessary for repairing extensively damaged vessels or maintaining a small fleet or battle group.
Despite its mobility, the Harbor-class Mobile Space Dock was neither fast nor maneuverable, rendering it highly susceptible to attack. While it possessed substantial armor, its weaponry was primarily geared towards defense against starfighter and boarding craft rather than large-scale engagements. Due to their inherent vulnerability, Harbor-class stations typically operated under the protection of at least one or two frigates, or as part of a larger battle group, relying on other vessels for defense. These stations were not generally equipped to launch or recover starfighters on a regular basis due to the inherent risks, although they often accommodated the starfighters of visiting ships.
The Harbor-class Mobile Space Dock incorporated hyperdrives, with a class 3 primary and a class 16 secondary. It also featured long-range sensors and a navigation computer. Its armament consisted of six port turret-mounted twin light turbolaser batteries, thirty port turret-mounted quad laser cannons, six starboard turret-mounted twin light turbolaser batteries, thirty starboard turret-mounted quad laser cannons, and ten tractor beam projectors. The station could also carry short-range runabouts and shuttlecraft. It was operated by a crew of 4,500 officers, engineers, and enlisted personnel, and could accommodate 8,000 passengers. Its supply stores were sufficient to last for two years.
During the Imperial Era, several Harbor-class Mobile Space Docks were actively used, with the majority belonging to the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire. The Alliance Navy of the Rebel Alliance operated two of these vessels during the Galactic Civil War: the fully operational Sanctum, and the recently captured Reserve, previously an Imperial asset. Following its acquisition by the Alliance, the Reserve underwent repairs and refitting at an Alliance-controlled shipyard. On one occasion, one of the two Alliance Harbor-class Mobile Space Docks provided service to two MC80 Liberty Type Heavy Star Cruisers and one MC80A Home One Heavy Star Cruiser.
The Harbor-class Mobile Space Dock was initially referenced and depicted in the 2018 Fully Operational roleplaying sourcebook from Fantasy Flight Games, though it was mistakenly identified as the Haven-class. The 2020 supplement Starships and Speeders correctly identifies the class as Harbor.
