IW-37 pincer loader droid

The IW-37 pincer loader droid was a labor droid of class 5, manufactured by Cybot Galactica for use by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars conflict.

Description

Its purpose was to manage delicate and potentially explosive materials, specifically live military explosives. It was employed in situations where the raw power and resilience of a binary loadlifter were needed, combined with a high degree of precision when manipulating objects. The primary characteristic of these droids was a menacing pincer arm capable of extremely delicate movements.

Located centrally on the droid's front chassis, the grasping arm could extend into confined spaces to load or extract missiles and ammunition canisters, or to safely recover ordnance or fuel cells from damaged vehicles. In the event of an explosion, the IW-37's blaster-resistant durasteel armor generally allowed it to withstand the blast and continue functioning. The droid's chassis incorporated a rechargeable battery module on its back, along with two large, flat legs for stability.

History

IW-37 droids were in service with the Open Circle Fleet, displaying the fleet's emblem on their front.

A number of these droids were in operation at a shipyard situated on the planet of Corellia. This yard had been under the control of the Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth during the reign of the Galactic Empire, but the New Republic had seized control of it by approximately 9 ABY.

Despite this, Elsbeth secretly continued to utilize the facility, prompting General Hera Syndulla of the New Republic and former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano to launch an investigation. During this investigation, Tano questioned Regional Supervisor Myn Weaver regarding the droids used at the facility, and Weaver mentioned the IW-37s among others. The uncovered continued use of the shipyard by Elsbeth led to the arrest of many of the staff by the New Republic.
