The Open Circle Fleet, which was also known as the Open Circle Armada, constituted a naval armada within the Galactic Republic's Navy. During the Clone Wars conflict against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, this fleet engaged the Confederacy navy in multiple battles, notably the Battle of Ringo Vinda, the Battle of Scipio, and the Battle of Coruscant. The Fifth Fleet was a component of this armada, and so was the task force under the command of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker.
The Open Circle Fleet, alternatively named the Open Circle Armada, operated under the leadership of Jedi High Council member and Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Open Circle Fleet comprised several distinct units, which included the task force of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, along with both the Fourth Fleet and the Fifth Fleet. Clone Flight Squad Seven stood out as the armada's most recognized ARC-170 starfighter squadron, existing as one of many within the Open Circle Fleet, alongside Red Squadron.
In the Battle of Ringo Vinda, the armada deployed a minimum of twenty Venator-class Star Destroyers, including Skywalker's flagship, in addition to at least three Acclamator-class assault ships, at least three Arquitens-class light cruisers, and a minimum of two Consular-class cruisers, including medical frigate 517.
Skywalker's own task force consisted of at least three Venator-class Star Destroyers, including his flagship, and two Arquitens-class light cruisers. By the time of the Battle of Coruscant, a significant number of Republic warships were integrated into the Open Circle Armada.
The Open Circle Fleet, also known as the Open Circle Armada, was established as a naval armada within the Republic Navy shortly after the First Battle of Geonosis and included the task force of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. During the Ringo Vinda campaign, Skywalker's task force blockaded the planet and its space station against the forces of Separatist Admiral Trench.
All units within the Open Circle Fleet included at least twenty Venator-class Star Destroyers along with numerous support vessels. Clone navigation officers belonging to the Open Circle Fleet were later present in 79's on Coruscant during the hunt for Fives. Skywalker's task force subsequently participated in the Battle of Scipio, engaging against the flotilla led by Separatist Head of State Count Dooku.
By the time the Battle of Coruscant took place, in which the fleet was also involved, a large number of warships had been incorporated into the Open Circle Fleet. The Fifth Fleet also formed part of this naval group. The Open Circle Armada continued its participation in the Outer Rim Sieges until the war's conclusion. The fleet's Clone Flight Squad Seven was assigned the mission of rescuing Supreme Chancellor Palpatine from the Separatists, and they escorted Jedi Generals Skywalker and Kenobi as they made their way to the Separatist flagship, the Invisible Hand.
At least one cruiser from the Open Circle Fleet, the Tribunal, also participated in the aftermath of the Siege of Mandalore, deploying the newly formed 332nd Division into combat against the forces of the former Sith Lord Maul. Following the successful conquest of the planet, the cruiser departed Mandalore for Coruscant with a captured Maul held onboard. However, en route, Order 66 was executed, causing the entire clone crew to turn against Ahsoka Tano, who had left the Jedi Order but was acting as an informal advisor and commander of the division. In the ensuing conflict, Maul was freed and forcibly removed the cruiser from hyperspace by destroying its hyperdrive, resulting in a crash on the surface of a nearby moon and the deaths of all aboard except for Maul, Ahsoka, and Captain Rex, who managed to evacuate the doomed vessel shortly before the crash.
The Open Circle Fleet made its initial appearance in the film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, and was first canonically identified within the 2016 edition of Star Wars: Complete Locations. It was first identified as the Open Circle Armada within the 2018 edition of Star Wars: Complete Vehicles.
Kevin Jenkins incorporated the Open Circle Fleet symbol into concept art of Resistance RZ-2 A-wing interceptors that he created for Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.
