Jax Pavan

Jax Pavan was a male Human Jedi Knight who served the Jedi Order during the declining years of the Galactic Republic. Lorn Pavan, his father, once held a position at the Jedi Temple. Even Piell was his instructor, and he wielded a blue lightsaber during the time of the Great Jedi Purge. After the Purge, he sought refuge in the depths of Coruscant's underworld. He was relentlessly pursued by Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, which forced him into a constant struggle for survival.

Biography

Early life

The Jedi recognized the Force potential within Jax's father's two-year-old son, prompting him to leave his position at the Jedi Temple. Lorn agreed to allow the Jedi to train Jax, but was then asked to leave the Temple, as contact between Jedi trainees and their parents was rarely permitted. Lorn complied, but he deeply missed his son and developed a strong animosity towards the Jedi.

Shortly before the Battle of Naboo, Darth Maul pursued Lorn and his partner I-5YQ in search of a holocube obtained from Hath Monchar that contained details of the planned blockade of Naboo. Lorn deactivated I-Five for the droid's safety and entrusted him to an acquaintance, instructing them to take the droid to the Jedi Temple. However, the acquaintance recognized the value of the modified droid and erased his memory. Maul ultimately killed Lorn, only to be defeated by then-Jedi Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, who bisected the Sith Lord in half during the Duel in Theed. It would be more than ten years before Maul resurfaced in the galaxy as a cyborg.

Anakin Skywalker, Kenobi's Padawan, developed a friendship with Jax Pavan and confided in him. Anakin presented Jax with a pyronium crystal as a gift. Jax was knighted a mere three months before the conclusion of the Clone Wars.

During the Clone Wars, I-Five found himself assigned to a Republic Mobile Surgical Unit, alongside Sullustan Den Dhur and Padawan Barriss Offee. He worked to recover his lost memories, eventually recalling Lorn's final request: to protect his son. I-Five returned to Coruscant to locate Jax and fulfill this obligation.

After the purge

Jax managed to survive Order 66 by living as a private investigator within the Blackpit Slums. To conceal his Jedi identity, he cut his dark brown hair, dyed it black, and permanently removed his beard. He traded his Jedi robes for a "nondescript vest of black bantha leather, threadbare gray trousers, and black boots, with an ankle-length, gunmetal-colored greatcoat over it all." He intentionally chose clothing that projected the image of a down-on-his-luck spacer.

He collaborated with Whiplash, an underground organization dedicated to constructing the "Underground Mag-Lev" to transport politicians, Jedi, and others who had angered the Empire off Coruscant. Jax eventually reunited with fellow freedom fighter Nick Rostu, who informed him that Even Piell, Jax's Jedi Master, had instructed Jax to locate the protocol droid 10-4TO, known as "Bug-Eyes," who possessed information vital to the growing rebellion. Jax also formed alliances with Laranth Tarak, I-5YQ, and Den Dhur. During their search, Nick Rostu revealed that Darth Vader was seeking him, though the reason remained a mystery.

Jax and his companions, with the reluctant assistance of Rokko, tracked the droid to the Factory District on Coruscant, where they discovered Bug-Eyes in the possession of Prince Xizor. After a fierce battle against both the Falleen and the feral droids of the Factory District, Jax and his group narrowly avoided the arrival of Darth Vader and returned to their respective sectors of Coruscant. Despite having the option to leave the planet, Jax resolved to remain and continue his fight against the new regime. The others, including Kaird of the Nediji and Haninum Tyk Rhinann, pledged to stand by him.

Whiplash

Pavan faces the fallen Chosen One.

Jax and his friends joined the Whiplash movement on Coruscant, aiding individuals in escaping offworld. One of their missions involved helping the Zeltron Dejah Duare flee the planet. However, her partner, the renowned Caamasi artist Ves Volette, was murdered shortly after she sought their assistance. They agreed to help her uncover Volette's killer. After concluding the investigation, Jax and his friends arranged for Dejah's departure, but were ambushed at the spaceport by the notorious bounty hunter Aurra Sing, who had been hired by Vader to capture Jax. Sing engaged Jax in a duel, which Jax survived by outwitting her and causing her to fall into a reposicator, where he believed she perished. Severely injured, Laranth decided to leave Jax's group, while Dejah chose to remain on Coruscant and join it.

Months later, Jax and Laranth discovered and decided to train Kajin Savaros, a young Force-sensitive individual being pursued by the Inquisitorius. Kajin's anger issues made training difficult, and eventually Dejah, whose romantic advances had been consistently rejected by Jax, betrayed the group by aligning herself with Inquisitor Probus Tesla and Darth Vader, resulting in the kidnapping of Laranth and Kajin. Vader erased Kajin's memories, intending to train him as an Inquisitor, and tortured Laranth in an attempt to obtain the bota plant extract Barriss Offee had given to I-5 and the Sith holocron Rhinann had stolen.

During a rescue mission, Jax learned that Dejah had betrayed the group due to her addiction to the sensual energies emitted by Force-users, which Jax had refused to provide. Vader attempted to analyze the bota extract, but it was absorbed by his system, causing an uncontrolled surge of Force energy that killed Dejah and injured Tesla. Vader then attempted to kill Kajin and Jax. Rhinann attacked Vader, distracting him long enough for Kajin and Jax to escape, but he sacrificed his life in the process.

Confrontation in the Imperial Security Bureau.

Jax, Laranth, I-5, and Kajin escaped with the help of Whiplash members, but Kajin's memories were likely permanently erased. Jax sent him to Shili to live a peaceful life. Jax chose to remain on Coruscant and continue assisting Whiplash, then confronted Laranth about their feelings for each other, refusing to let her dismiss the topic as she had before. Sharing their emotions through the Force for a second time, Jax and Laranth realized they were in love, but they agreed to take things slowly.

Reflecting on the previous battle, Jax recalled Vader demanding the return of the pyronium nugget. This led him to a seemingly impossible conclusion, but one he feared was true: Anakin Skywalker, his friend from his time as a Padawan, was Darth Vader.

Returning to their dwelling, Jax experienced a brief connection to the Cosmic Force, realizing that only the Force itself could have enabled such an experience after the loss of the bota extract. Jax felt this was the Force's way of affirming that he was fulfilling his purpose, and he then turned his attention to a new client.

Personality and traits

Pavan during the Dark Times.

Jax was prone to deep introspection, sometimes to the point of overthinking. He frequently pondered the nature of one's connection to the Force, as well as his own connection and decisions. Before Order 66, Jax had long brown hair, a beard, and wore the traditional Jedi robes. Afterward, he dyed his hair black, permanently removed his beard, and adopted a long, high-collared, gray greatcoat.

Powers and abilities

While skilled with the Force, Jax lacked a consistent connection to it. He perceived the Force as ribbons of color extending into multiple dimensions, which he could use to manipulate his surroundings, perceive people's "auras," or sense webs of personal connections. He also possessed proficiency with a lightsaber and lightwhip. Although he had received some training with lightwhips at the Jedi Temple, he was not a master of the weapon. His training under Even Piell provided him with at least a fundamental understanding of all lightsaber combat forms, but he excelled in Makashi.

Equipment

Unlike most Jedi, Jax retained a small collection of personal items after the Purge. These included a holocron of Yoda, a crystal from Dantooine, and a reliquary containing a stone Skywalker had gifted him. In contrast to most Jedi, Pavan wielded a red lightsaber during a duel with Aurra, which belonged to her and had been sent to Pavan by Captain Gregar Typho.

Behind the scenes

Jax Pavan's physical appearance bears a resemblance to a younger version of George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars.
