CR90 corvette

The CR90 corvette, often called the Corellian corvette or Rebel blockade runner, and sometimes referred to as an Alderaan cruiser, represented a compact, adaptable capital ship produced by the Corellian Engineering Corporation.

Throughout the galaxy, the CR90 found use among diverse groups, spanning from pirates to corporations and galactic navies, with a service record stretching from at least 52 BBY to as late as 137 ABY. Mirroring other CEC creations, it was known for its exceptional adaptability, enabling it to fulfill roles ranging from routine freight hauling to prominent diplomatic escort duties.

Characteristics

A Corellian corvette

The CR90, a highly adaptable starship, saw widespread use across the galaxy by both governmental bodies and private entities. Its internal design was modular, allowing for simple reconfiguration of the Corellian corvette to suit various functions. Certain older corvette models, such as the CR70, could be readily upgraded to CR90 specifications through retrofit packages like the Vanguard c20.

Typical configurations included a troop carrier, a light escort, a cargo transport, or a passenger liner. This ease of modification became synonymous with CEC products, boosting the corvette's resale value. A less common variant had the capacity to carry starfighters, such as the Night Caller and Constrictor.

Weaponry varied, but the standard loadout consisted of two Taim & Bak H9 dual turbolasers alongside four single turbolasers. CR90 corvettes could potentially be equipped with up to eight turbolasers, six laser cannons, and four ion cannons. Under the standard configuration, the turrets were unable to target anything directly behind the corvette's engines, which resulted in a well-known axial blind spot.

A common armament configuration for combat-focused corvettes consisted of six H9 dual turbolasers. The CR92a Assassin-class corvette, a successor to the CR90 that was purpose-built for combat, featured a similar weapons array.

The ship was capable of sustaining acceleration levels of up to 2,100 G and could accommodate 600 passengers. However, its class 2 hyperdrive was relatively slow when compared to other ships of similar size. The standard crew complement was 8 officers and 38 enlisted personnel, though the total crew size could range from 30 to 165, depending on the specific configuration.

Remarkably, the CR90 could be piloted by as few as two individuals, an ability demonstrated when Han Solo and Chewbacca operated a series of corvettes named Jaina's Light. It could even be flown solo using a steering yoke, as shown by Wedge Antilles when he piloted the modified corvette Night Caller.

The 150 meter-long vessel could achieve atmospheric speeds of 950 kilometers per hour.

History

Republic service

The CR90 corvette was introduced in the final decades of the Galactic Republic, leading to the gradual refitting of older corvette models like the CR70 to this new standard. Republic CR90 corvettes served within the Judicial Forces and later within the Republic Navy after its reestablishment during the Clone Wars. Before the Wars, the CR90 model was considered a mid-sized corvette.

Imperial service

A corvette in space

The CR90 corvettes, dwarfed by the massive Imperial-class Star Destroyers of the Imperial Navy, were used for diplomatic missions and escort duties within the Galactic Empire. In fleet engagements, CR90 corvettes were commonly assigned to engage enemy starfighters or to evacuate the battlefield with crucial cargo or intelligence. Prior to the Dissolution of the Imperial Senate by Emperor Palpatine, Imperial senators utilized these corvettes as diplomatic couriers.

Rebel and fringe service

In contrast to their Imperial counterparts, Alliance CR90 corvettes functioned as front-line combat vessels during the early stages of the Galactic Civil War, typically serving as anti-starfighter screens. The ready availability of CR90 parts and mechanics made them a suitable choice for the resource-strapped Rebellion. Their common presence made them a popular choice among Rebels, pirates, and smugglers, earning them the moniker "blockade runner" due to their ability to evade Imperial patrols. However, they proved ineffective against larger vessels like the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, save for suicidal ramming maneuvers, unless deployed in large numbers. The Space Battle at Kuat, where five Corvettes inflicted significant damage on the Star Destroyer Tyranny, serves as one such example.

Imperial authorities, aware of the Rebellion's use of the corvette, frequently stopped them for inspections based on flimsy pretexts.

Tyber Zann, a crime lord, procured CR90 corvettes for his fleet as part of his corruption operations throughout the galaxy.

New Republic service

Following the Alliance's transformation into the New Republic, CR90 corvettes continued to play a vital role in the newly established New Republic Defense Fleet until they were phased out of frontline service through modernization initiatives like the New Class Modernization Program.

Later history

Several CR90s were used as part of a secret retreat in 137 ABY. At least two were used during the Evacuation of Dac.

Descendants

Sundered Heart

The CR90 design, itself derived from a lineage of similar ships, served as the foundation for various derivative designs and inventive modifications.

Sundered Heart

The Sundered Heart, a corvette modified for exceptional speed, stands as a notable example of a heavily modified CR90. Equipped with an additional set of sublight engines, this vessel could achieve sublight acceleration speeds up to four times greater than the original CR90.

CR92a Assassin-class

A CR92a Assassin-class corvette

The CR92a Assassin-class corvette began to see widespread deployment around the time of the Battle of Hoth. Commonly referred to as the "Modified Corvette," the Assassin-class was specifically engineered for combat. In its standard configuration, it carried six dual turbolasers and a warhead launcher. The Imperial Navy was known to deploy the Assassin-class in significant numbers.

Corellian Buccaneer

The Corellian Buccaneer, another militarized corvette class, was introduced by 7 ABY. While sharing similar technical specifications with the CR90, it boasted a standard armament of ten dual turbolasers. One such vessel was operated by the Dynamic Automata company within the Pentastar Alignment.

Pocket carriers

Night Caller

Following the Battle of Endor, the New Republic captured at least two distinct CR90 refits designed to accommodate starfighters. The first, Night Caller, was seized from Warlord Zsinj in 7 ABY. Although largely similar to the CR90, it was purpose-built from the ground up to function as a small carrier. The primary modifications from the original CR90 design included an expanded bridge section incorporating a starfighter hold, and a tractor beam projector more commonly found on larger warships.

FarStar

FarStar

The second known carrier refit was FarStar. Originally commissioned in 52 BBY, it was refitted by order of Moff Kentor Sarne. A sizable docking bay was attached to the vessel's spine, and its hyperdrive system was modified to accommodate the altered hull shape. It remains unclear whether this modification was standardized or a custom Imperial design.

Behind the scenes

The CR90 corvette's design evolved from a concept initially intended for the Millennium Falcon. After that design was rejected for its resemblance to the Eagle Transporter from Space: 1999, it was repurposed to become the CR90. The most prominent change was the replacement of the cockpit area with the distinctive "hammerhead" bridge section. Furthermore, the escape pods were relocated to the lower hull, with laser cannons occupying the pods' original positions. This was essential because Tantive IV had to launch an escape pod while inside the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Devastator's ventral hangar bay.

A CR90 Hologram

Corvettes are known to have a "blind spot," meaning they cannot target anything directly behind their engines, a fact familiar to players of the X-Wing computer game series who exploited this weakness to destroy them. This seems to contradict the opening scene of A New Hope, where Tantive IV fires upon Devastator from directly behind. This discrepancy might be explained by Devastator's larger size and slightly higher position (though Tantive IV's ventral cannon was also utilized).

Early RPG statistics from West End Games listed the Corellian corvette's armament as six double turbolaser turrets, despite the corvettes in A New Hope and Return of the Jedi clearly only mounting two. This was later retconned by describing the heavier armament as an optional upgrade. The CR90 in Star Wars: Empire at War is armed with only eight laser cannons, a decision made for game balance purposes, positioning the ship as an anti-fighter counterpart to the Tartan-class patrol cruiser for the Rebel faction. In comparison, the Imperial-class Star Destroyers are depicted with only four turbolasers instead of their supposed sixty, while the MC80 Liberty type Star Cruiser is similarly reduced from 48 turbolasers to four to match the Imperial-class in strength.

Early schematics of the CR90 depict a shorter ship than the original filming miniature. The reason for this is unknown, but this stunted appearance persisted and affected subsequent depictions of the ship, from roleplaying deckplans to computer models in the X-Wing series. This error carried over into Revenge of the Sith's portrayal of the Tantive IV as a stunted ship. The Rebel Alliance Blueprints book retconned this by identifying it as a CR70 corvette, while the longer Tantive IV is now considered the definitive CR90.

In the Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds expansion pack Clone Campaigns, players can access a CR90 corvette (labeled "Rebel Blockade Runner") as a playable ship via a cheat code. The cheat code's name referenced the Tantive IV.

The Essential Guide to Warfare notes that Corellian corvettes were an important part of the Imperial Support Fleet, but doesn't specify the model. The book states that CR70 and CR90 were two of the most common models.

According to The Sounds of Star Wars, the sound of the rebel blockade runner in the opening scene of A New Hope is a combination of a slowed-down World War II AT6 propeller-driven racing airplane and a 747 jet.
