Lakris, residing on the planet of Celwis, was a youthful Chiss female. She was the daughter of Lakansu and her husband, Lakphro, who worked as a rancher.
At one juncture, the yubal ranch owned by Lakphro was chosen as the site for a group of Agbui, under the leadership of Haplif, to establish themselves and cultivate spices. During the Agbui's time there, Lakris developed a friendship with an Agbui girl named Frosif, and she attempted to demonstrate a "telepathy trick" to her. This involved summoning a growzer, Slobber, by using a brass sealer to zip up its teeth. However, the sound produced by the brass sealer caused Frosif to collapse in fear. Prior to her arrival on Celwis, Frosif had experienced trauma from the sounds of a flat-blast artillery shell, which were similar to the noise of the brass sealer. As an act of apology for the incident, Haplif, Frosif, and her mother, Shimkif, presented Lakris and her mother, Lakansu, with a pair of metal brooches as a gift. Lakphro, suspecting the gift was a bribe, secretly took Lakris's brooch and dispatched it to his cousin, Lakbulbup, and his wife, Dilpram, requesting that they send it to a metallurgy laboratory. However, Lakbulbup instead sent Lakris's brooch to Chiss Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo (Thrawn), who subsequently utilized the brooch to expose the Agbui's scheme to instigate a civil war within the Chiss Ascendancy. Upon receiving it, Thrawn deduced that the Agbui were employing the jewelry as instruments to provoke internal conflict in the Chiss Ascendancy. Senior Captain Xodlak'in'daro (Lakinda) later confirmed that the brooch contained nyix, the most precious and scarce metal known to the Chaos. Lakris never got her brooch back; it was handed over to its rightful owner, the leader of the species whose world, Sunrise, had been decimated solely so the Agbui could seize control of their nyix mines: the Magys.
