The Lumablast Rocket, alternatively referred to as a luma blast, represented a specific kind of wrist rocket manufactured by BlasTech. Its primary function was to induce temporary blindness in living creatures through a powerful burst of light, rather than inflicting lasting physical injuries. These rockets were integrated into the MM9 rocket system, which was a wrist rocket launcher produced by Kelvarek Consolidated Arms. During the events of 23 BBY, Granta Omega, a Sith cultist, deployed at least one of these rockets in combat against Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight, on the planet of Korriban. Furthermore, Boba Fett, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, incorporated Lumablast Rockets into his MM9 rocket system at some point during his career. The effect produced by a Lumablast Rocket was similar to, but less potent than, that of a luma grenade.
The Lumablast Rocket, a type of wrist rocket also known as a luma blast, was engineered to explode with a vivid flash of orange and yellow-colored light. The intensity of this flash was such that it could still affect members of the Human species even with their eyes closed. Recovery from a luma blast could take a Human several minutes. Although it didn't cause permanent physical harm, the light emitted by a Lumablast Rocket could temporarily blind living creatures within a four-meter radius. These rockets had a maximum range of 100 meters and emitted a hissing sound upon launch. The flash generated by a Lumablast Rocket was comparable to, but weaker than, the blast of a luma grenade, which could blind a Human for thirty minutes, or up to an hour if the individual was wearing night vision goggles.
BlasTech Industries was manufacturing the Lumablast Rocket by 23 BBY, around the same year that the luma grenade became available, which was as early as 26 BBY. These rockets were used in the MM9 rocket system, a wrist rocket launcher model from Kelvarek Consolidated Arms. During the system's production, sales and ownership of Lumablast Rockets were restricted to those with government authorization, but they were still commonly sold for 400 credits apiece. In 23 BBY, Granta Omega, a Sith cultist, carried at least one of these rockets for use in the wrist rocket launchers he was wearing on the planet of Korriban. While in Korriban's Valley of the Dark Lords, Omega used a Lumablast Rocket to briefly blind Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight, but he ultimately failed to defeat the Jedi with his other weapons and was killed. Boba Fett, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, employed Lumablast Rockets in his MM9 rocket system at some stage during his career, which began during the Clone Wars and spanned over six decades into the time of the Galactic Alliance.
The first mention of luma blasts appeared in a list of specialty rockets used by Boba Fett in The Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology, a reference book from 1997 by Bill Smith. The rocket was later identified as a Lumablast Rocket in a side bar about ammunition used with the MM9 rocket system in Arms & Equipment Guide, a 2002 sourcebook by Jeff Grubb and Owen K.C. Stephens for the revised edition of Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game. In 2004, at least one Lumablast Rocket appeared in a fight between Granta Omega and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Jedi Quest: The Final Showdown, a novel by Jude Watson. Other wrist rockets were fired during the same scene, but none of them were identified as Lumablast Rockets. The novel also did not identify the type of wrist rocket launcher that Omega used to fire the Lumablast Rocket.
Jedi Quest: The Final Showdown stated that it would take several minutes to recover from the effects of the rocket, which contradicted information in Arms & Equipment Guide stating that recovery would take less than a minute. As the sourcebook only provided the recovery time as game mechanics and the novel was released afterward, this article uses the novel's recovery time of a several minutes. In Arms and Equipment Guide, the only era when the Lumablast Rockets were confirmed to be available was the Rise of the Empire era, which is the only era provided for the MM9 rocket system in the book. However, while the rockets were not featured with Boba Fett elsewhere, Fett did carry the MM9 rocket system during the Rise of the Empire era, Rebellion era, New Republic era, New Jedi Order era, and Legacy era. While the 2008 novel Coruscant Nights I: Jedi Twilight revealed that the effects of a luma grenade could be negated using polarized lenses, no source has stated that the same was true for Lumablast Rockets.
