Map to Skywalker

The map that led to the legendary Jedi, Luke Skywalker, was successfully pieced together by the Resistance. The Skywalker map was essentially a star map in holographic form. It charted a section of the galaxy, pinpointing the location of the first Jedi Temple situated on Ahch-To. This was where Luke Skywalker had chosen to live in exile. Kylo Ren characterized it as a navigational chart spanning across galaxies.

During their conflict against the Resistance, the First Order managed to retrieve a segment of the map from the Archives that belonged to the Empire. Simultaneously, Lor San Tekka obtained another fragment of the map. R2-D2, Skywalker's droid, also possessed a piece of the map given to him by his master. To safeguard the data, he entered a low-power mode. Neither portion of the map could reveal the destination on its own.

The First Order only needed the piece held by Tekka to locate Skywalker and finalize the map. Based on a report that Jinata Security had discovered a mysterious man within the Emperor's Observatory, Ren, Gideon Hask, and a squad of stormtroopers went to the aquatic planet Pillio. The man turned out to be Del Meeko, a former comrade of Hask's from Inferno Squad. After forcing Meeko to disclose where Tekka was, Ren allowed Hask to confront and kill Meeko. They eventually found Tekka on Jakku, but they did not acquire the map from him.

Following the Battle of Starkiller Base, R2 reactivated from his low-power state. The Resistance combined R2's fragment with the one previously held by Tekka (who had been killed by Ren) to reveal the complete map. Rey, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 used the map to travel to Ahch-To, where they encountered the self-exiled Jedi Master.

Behind the scenes

J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, and Michael Arndt conceived the idea for the 2015 movie Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens that R2-D2 acquired crucial information from the Empire, including the locations of Jedi Temples, when he interfaced with the data network of the Death Star during Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. This detail was later integrated into the Star Wars universe through the comic Star Wars (2020) 13.
