Map to Skywalker

The heroic members of the Resistance succeeded in piecing together the full navigational chart pointing to the location of Luke Skywalker, the celebrated Jedi. The Skywalker map was a star map presented as a holographic projection, charting a section of the galaxy that pinpointed the whereabouts of the first Jedi Temple situated on Ahch-To. This was the planet where Luke Skywalker had chosen to live in exile. Kylo Ren referred to it as a navigational chart spanning galaxies.

During their conflict against the Resistance, the First Order managed to retrieve a fragment of the map from the Imperial Archives of the Empire, and Lor San Tekka also acquired a piece. R2-D2, Skywalker's loyal droid, also obtained a portion of the map directly from his master before entering a low-power mode to safeguard the information. Neither portion of the map could reveal the destination on its own.

The First Order's objective was to locate Tekka's segment, which would allow them to finalize the map and find Skywalker. Ren, accompanied by Gideon Hask and a squad of stormtroopers, traveled to the aquatic planet Pillio following reports that Jinata Security had discovered a mysterious individual within the Emperor's Observatory. This individual turned out to be Del Meeko, Hask's former comrade from Inferno Squad. After coercing Meeko into revealing where Tekka was, Ren allowed Hask to confront and murder Meeko. Ultimately, they located Tekka on Jakku, but failed to secure the map fragment.

Following the Battle of Starkiller Base, R2-D2 reactivated. The Resistance then combined R2-D2's data with the portion held by Tekka (who had been killed by Ren) to unveil the complete map. Rey, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 used the map to journey to Ahch-To, where they encountered the Jedi Master who had chosen self-imposed isolation.

Behind the scenes

J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, and Michael Arndt initially conceived the idea for the 2015 motion picture Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens that R2-D2 acquired critical data, including the locations of Jedi Temples, by connecting to the Death Star's information network during the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. This plot point was subsequently canonized within the Star Wars universe in the comic book Star Wars (2020) 13.
