The pirate Maz Kanata used this chest to safeguard her most prized possessions, such as a hyperspace sextant that was 4000 years old and the Skywalker lightsaber. This box had been gifted to Kanata by Chewbacca, a Wookiee who held a special place in her heart. By the time that the Galactic Civil War was occurring, Imperial General Kardan had obtained the box and was utilizing it to store various relics that he had taken from planets invaded by his troops. Lando Calrissian managed to retrieve the box during a Heist on the Halcyon while the war was in progress.
