Wroshyr tree

The wroshyr tree represented a species of colossal, remarkably enduring trees that bore cones. These trees were native to the planet Kashyyyk.

Description

More than 1,000 unique types of wroshyr trees existed, each specifically adapted to thrive across diverse environments on Kashyyyk, with the exception of the polar regions. One example was the tropical wroshyr found in the Wawaatt Archipelago, averaging between 300 and 400 meters in height. In contrast, the deep-forest variety was considerably larger, reaching heights of several kilometers. Another distinct type was the white wroshyr, which had become extinct millennia before the final decades of the Republic Era.

Wroshyr trees possessed lifespans extending up to 50,000 years, producing seed-bearing cones approximately every 100 years.

Ecology

Wroshyr trees held a dominant position within Kashyyyk's landscape and environment. They essentially formed the foundation of a multifaceted, vertically structured ecosystem, stretching from their roots to the uppermost reaches of their canopies. Numerous animals, parasites (such as the wroshyr louse), and various plants (including the zha-raratha vine and the needle blossom) either grew on or inhabited the wroshyrs.

Uses by Wookiees

Overview

Wroshyr trees played a fundamental role in the existence of Kashyyyk's indigenous sentient inhabitants, the Wookiees, who identified as "The People of the Trees."

Habitation

The sheer size of wroshyr trees allowed entire communities to establish dwellings within their trunks. In the deep forests, Wookiee towns and cities expanded beyond the confines of the wroshyr trunks by constructing platforms that rested upon the interconnected branches of closely situated trees. A notable example of such a city was Rwookrrorro, the birthplace of Chewbacca. In coastal areas where wroshyrs were smaller and less densely clustered, as seen in the town of Kachirho, Wookiee settlements consisted of individual tree-based communities.

Timber

Maz Kanata owned a chest made of wroshyr wood.

Wroshyr wood exhibited exceptional properties. It demonstrated resistance to burning, withstanding impacts from a turbolaser while only experiencing minor charring and splintering. However, a drawback was the requirement for proton-teeth saw blades for cutting, which occasionally broke during operation, resulting in fatal injuries to the operators. Despite this, uninhabited wroshyrs were harvested for their timber, serving both domestic needs and off-world trade. Domestic applications included the construction of platforms and balconies in Wookiee settlements, as well as components for certain weapons and starship interiors. The pirate leader Maz Kanata possessed a chest crafted from wroshyr wood, dating back thousands of years.

Sap

Wookiees utilized the sap derived from wroshyr trees for the creation of medicine, food, and beverages, in addition to employing it as a foundational ingredient in the production of fuel, oils, and chemical substances. Distillation of the sap could also yield sapwater, a slightly sweeter variant of water.

Amber

By the time Obi-Wan Kenobi was an apprentice, the white wroshyrs had been extinct for a considerable period. Nevertheless, deposits of their fossilized resin, known as meryx, remained and were recognized as the single most scarce gemstone throughout the galaxy.

Other products

The leaves and bark of wroshyrs were also incorporated into the manufacturing of textiles, weaponry, furniture, implements, and ornamental artifacts.
