MedStar II: Jedi Healer

MedStar II: Jedi Healer is the second book in the MedStar Duology. Michael Reaves and Steve Perry are the authors, and it was released by Del Rey on September 28, 2004. The narrative picks up roughly a week after the events of MedStar I: Battle Surgeons, and it follows the experiences of Barriss Offee, Jos Vondar, Tolk le Trene, Klo Merit, I-5YQ, Den Dhur, and Kaird, the Nediji, as they remain on the planet of Drongar amidst the conflict between the Republic and the Separatists for control of the bota found there. At the same time as the novel's release, an abridged audiobook adaption with Jonathan Davis as the narrator was also made available.

Publisher's summary

As the Clone Wars rage across the galaxy, the situation on the remote world of Drongar reaches a critical point, with Republic forces locked in intense combat with the Separatists…

The anticipated enemy attack commences as the Separatists deploy vast numbers of droids. Despite receiving reinforcements, the Republic's organic soldiers are simply outmatched by the battle droids' armor. This reality is especially evident in the sweltering Jasserak jungle, where a small medical unit faces overwhelming challenges. With casualties mounting, surgeons Jos Vondar and Kornell "Uli" Divini realize that time is running out.

Even Padawan Barriss Offee's Jedi skills are being pushed to their limits. Barriss faces an ordeal that could very well result in her own demise—and that of many others. As the conflict escalates, this obscure mobile med unit is left with only one course of action. A shocking, daring, and unprecedented move is the only option available to Jos and his team. The unthinkable has become necessary. Whether it will lead to their survival remains uncertain.

Plot summary

Still mourning the death of his close friend Zan Yant, Dr. Vondar finds Zan replaced by the young surgeon Kornell "Uli" Divini, who develops an attraction to Barriss. However, Barriss does not return his feelings because of the Jedi Order's restrictions on attachments. Kaird successfully concludes his operations on Drongar, benefiting the Separatists and Black Sun's objectives, and then departs.

Meanwhile, the spy, who is also in the service of the Separatists and Black Sun, continues to sabotage the Republic's Rimsoos efforts. Barriss nearly succumbs to the dark side when she uses bota to heal herself but resists it at the last moment. Utilizing her Force abilities, she identifies Klo Merit as the spy. Dr. Vondar confronts Merit and uses a blaster to kill him, thus avenging Zan's death.

Both the Republic and the Separatists withdraw from Drongar upon discovering that the drug has mutated into a worthless weed. However, the drug's capacity to enhance Force abilities to the point of the dark side, as demonstrated by Barriss, remains a secret to both factions. I-5YQ and Den Dhur set off for Coruscant to fulfill the late Lorn Pavan's wish of caring for his son, Jax, at the same time as I-Five starts to believe he has achieved sentience. Barriss goes back to the planet as a Jedi Knight.
