Mira

Mira, a human female of Mandalorian descent, began her journey as a Neo-Crusader and bounty hunter. However, her path took an unexpected turn when she became a Jedi Sentinel, joining the ranks of the Lost Jedi. Originating from the moon of Nar Shaddaa, she became a devoted follower of Meetra Surik, also known as the Jedi Exile, assisting in Surik's quest to locate the scattered Jedi Masters around 3951 BBY.

Biography

Mira's life began around 3974 BBY. During the Mandalorian Wars, as the Mandalorians conducted raids on planets in the Outer Rim, Mira was enslaved following the destruction of her home. She was raised from a young age by the Mandalorians, who eventually integrated her into a Mandalorian squad. There, she acquired skills in combat, hunting, and survival, becoming an accepted member of the unit. However, at the age of fourteen, the cataclysmic Battle of Malachor V transpired, and the activation of the Mass Shadow Generator resulted in the loss of her adopted Mandalorian family.

Following the defeat of the Mandalorians at Malachor V, the Galactic Republic experienced a surge of refugees, with many, including Mira, finding themselves in Nar Shaddaa's refugee sector. To survive in the harsh environment, she adopted the profession of a bounty hunter. While motivated by financial gain, she also recognized the lasting impact of the Mandalorian Wars, which had left many individuals displaced and searching for purpose. She hoped to reunite these people and rebuild the galaxy, perhaps finding her own sense of belonging or a new family in the process. Her distinctive attire served as a strategic tool to disarm male adversaries, enabling her to subdue them and fulfill any outstanding bounties. Unlike many bounty hunters who reveled in taking lives, Mira held the belief that a skilled hunter could achieve their objectives without resorting to lethal force, particularly when familiar with their targets. Despite her unconventional views, she achieved considerable success, inevitably attracting the attention of envious rivals. This led to her being targeted by an unknown entity who enlisted the Wookiee Hanharr to pursue her.

Hanharr plotted to corner Mira in the ventilation shafts beneath Nar Shaddaa's docks, intending to force her into a series of mined escape routes. However, Mira anticipated his plan, remotely deactivating the mines before reactivating them as Hanharr gave chase. Hanharr barely survived the resulting explosion and pleaded with Mira to end his suffering by killing him. Overcome with compassion, Mira chose to save his life, unknowingly incurring a Wookiee life debt.

According to Wookiee tradition, a Wookiee is obligated to pledge a life debt to their savior. However, Hanharr harbored an intense hatred for humans, bordering on madness. While he acknowledged the life debt he owed to Mira, his insanity warped his interpretation of it, turning it into a perverse and malevolent obligation. Hanharr viewed owing a life debt to a human like Mira as a form of 'living death'. Consequently, he directed his animosity towards Mira, constantly hunting her and threatening her life instead of protecting her. Hanharr frequently stalked Mira, seizing her by the throat and vowing to derive pleasure from killing her at some point in the future, when the opportunity presented itself. Despite Mira's repeated attempts to reject his life debt, Hanharr's derangement prevented him from seeing any alternative other than to kill her.

The conflict reached its climax when Goto, a shadowy crime lord, publicized Meetra Surik's arrival on Nar Shaddaa. Hanharr, along with numerous other bounty hunters, began searching for Surik, each vying for the bounty placed on any remaining Jedi by Goto. However, Mira was secretly employed by Zez-Kai Ell, a former Jedi Master and Council member living in self-imposed exile on Nar Shaddaa, to discreetly monitor Surik and shield her from Goto's influence until he could communicate with her.

Mira observed Surik's actions, which involved assisting Nar Shaddaa's refugees and undermining the Exchange's operations. When Visquis, the local Exchange leader, attempted to ensnare Surik in a trap within the Jekk'Jekk Tarr, Mira intercepted Surik's envirosuit (designed to protect her from the Jekk'Jekk Tarr's toxic atmosphere) and allowed Visquis to capture her. Unbeknownst to her, Hanharr had conspired with the Quarren. While Surik was confined within the Jekk'Jekk Tarr tunnels, Visquis permitted Hanharr to confront and kill Mira in his arena. However, Mira demonstrated her resilience, defeating Hanharr and leaving him seemingly dead in the arena. She then fought her way through Visquis's Ubese bounty hunters, facilitated Surik's entry, and escaped through the tunnels herself. Subsequently, Mira joined the crew of the Ebon Hawk in their endeavor to rescue Surik from Goto's yacht.

Mira once fought a Sith assassin

She maintained her loyalty to Surik, accompanying her on her various adventures aboard the Ebon Hawk. However, in Surik's presence, she found herself less hesitant to kill her opponents, a phenomenon she struggled to comprehend. Recognizing Mira's latent Force sensitivity, which was evident in her description of the natural rhythms of life on Nar Shaddaa, Surik instructed Mira in the ways of the Force, enabling her to become a Jedi Sentinel. Unaccustomed to the Force, Mira was initially overwhelmed by the influx of sensations and activity, but Surik guided her in filtering out the noise and calming her mind.

On Malachor V, Mira encountered and defeated an adversary she never anticipated seeing again: Hanharr, who had been rescued from death by Kreia on the condition that he persist in hunting and killing Mira. Despite being defeated and kneeling, Hanharr's irrational hatred for Mira persisted because she had once saved his life. With Hanharr's madness fueled by hate undiminished, he begged Mira to kill him, preferring death to enduring the 'living death' he would suffer if Mira spared him a second time. Weary of living in constant fear and recognizing that Hanharr would perpetually pursue her if allowed to live, Mira granted Hanharr's request and ended his life. Following the final confrontation with Surik, Darth Traya predicted that Mira would cease her life as a hunter and instead fully embrace life. "She was not born to be a predator," Darth Traya declared among her final words. "Her death will occur in many years time on a forgotten planet, saving the lives of others. But it will be her choice, and she will have no regrets."

Personality and traits

Mira's portrait

Mira possessed a sharp wit, a no-nonsense attitude, and a rapid-fire manner of speaking. In Meetra Surik's words, she had "lots of attitude." Despite her tough exterior, she harbored a deep empathy for all living beings, which led her to avoid killing unless absolutely necessary. This compassion stemmed from her own experiences of loss and her understanding of what it meant to lose family, as she had on Malachor V. When she joined Surik, she began to kill more readily, a change that she found deeply unsettling.

Mira's revealing outfit

Mira's attire consisted of a form-fitting, revealing leather ballistic mesh jacket, which she claimed served to distract her targets. Vogga the Hutt described her as "shapely," suggesting that her physical appearance was considered attractive for a human female. She excelled in her profession and jokingly remarked that if she were to become a Jedi, she would have to turn herself in to collect the bounty on her own head.

Mira was an exceptional tracker and demolition expert. When assigned a target, she would "listen" for them, developing an intuitive understanding of their movements and intentions. Due to her Force sensitivity, she could sense the natural flow of life on Nar Shaddaa, predicting her targets' destinations even before they did. Her demolition skills were cultivated during her youth as a Mandalorian slave, where she handled mines and munitions, gaining extensive knowledge of their functionality. Her expertise in mines and other portable explosives granted her the remarkable ability to safely navigate minefields, provided she had the opportunity to survey the area beforehand.

Behind the scenes

Mira's character was conceived by Obsidian Entertainment as one of the companions in the 2004 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Like most companions, her story was crafted by Chris Avellone. Her voice was provided by Emily Berry. The visual design that defined her appearance in the game was created by Brian Menze. Initial concept art depicted Mira with significantly more disheveled hair than what ultimately appeared in the game, due to limitations of the game's engine.

Concept art of Mira for The Sith Lords

Mira and Hanharr are both encountered on Nar Shaddaa, and one of them will join Meetra Surik's party, depending on the player's alignment when infiltrating Visquis's hideout beneath the Jekk'Jekk Tarr. Players aligned with the light side or neutrality will be joined by Mira, while those aligned with the dark side will be joined by Hanharr after he defeats Mira in an arena battle. Another possibility involves Mira succumbing to the dark side later in life and, after living a life that Darth Traya characterized as being "all but a predator", being assassinated by other bounty hunters on Ord Mantell "before they, too, meet their end."

Surik could earn Mira's respect by embracing the dark side and agreeing to eliminate the three captains in Iziz for Anda in exchange for a substantial sum of credits. Mira is Force-sensitive, and players with sufficient influence over her can have Surik train her in the ways of the Force, transforming her into a Jedi Sentinel. This training involves Surik teaching her how to "listen," mirroring a lesson the Exile received from Kreia at Nar Shaddaa's central hub.

If the player chooses the non-canon option of playing as a male Surik, he can express romantic interest in Mira, but she will reject his advances. She explains that he is too old for her and that she has no desire to compete with Brianna, the Handmaiden, and Visas Marr for his affections, adding that she would be too much for him to handle. There is also a scene where Brianna asks Mira if she "understands men". If the player is female, Surik can ask her the same question, with the same responses.

On Malachor V, Mira has the option to spare Hanharr's life if the player deems it more merciful. According to cut content, Mira would have been among those who attacked Kreia on Malachor V, only to be defeated and imprisoned by Darth Sion. As a result, Surik would have been forced to choose whether to rescue them or not. Mira can also be killed by Hanharr on Malachor V.
