Mission to Kashyyyk (Clone Force 99)

The Kashyyyk operation was a minor conflict that occurred on the planet of Kashyyyk in the early years of the Imperial era. The Clone Force 99 mercenary unit sought to bring Jedi Padawan Gungi back to his people living on the forested world. However, they became involved with a Wookiee warrior tribe defending against an Imperial convoy that was engaged in massive deforestation. The convoy was ultimately annihilated, and Imperial personnel were either killed or driven away thanks to the combined efforts of Clone Force 99, the Wookiees, and the indigenous wildlife of Kashyyyk.

Background

Kashyyyk's Occupation

Following its formation after the end of the Clone Wars, the Galactic Empire initiated a siege and subsequent occupation of Kashyyyk. The Empire's primary motivation for targeting Kashyyyk was its abundant natural resources and to exploit the Wookiee population as a source of slave labor. To facilitate industrial development, the Empire enlisted Trandoshan mercenaries, known for their long-standing and intense animosity towards the Wookiees. Using incinerator tanks provided by the Empire and modified to unleash devastating fire streams, the Trandoshan mercenaries began a large-scale deforestation campaign, often destroying Wookiee settlements in their path.

Discovery of Gungi

While on a mission to sell fake chain codes at the Vanguard Axis base on its station, the Clone Force 99 mercenaries discovered Jedi Padawan Gungi being held captive at the station, awaiting sale to an unknown buyer. Moved by compassion, Omega freed the young Wookiee. The team successfully evacuated Gungi from the station aboard their ship, the Marauder.

Initially suspicious of the clone squad due to his experiences during Order 66, Gungi eventually revealed that he had been attempting to return to his home planet of Kashyyyk after Order 66 but was captured by smugglers. Hunter, the squad leader, agreed to return Gungi to Kashyyyk and assist him in finding a Wookiee tribe willing to accept him.

The Operation

Initial Engagement

As they approached the planet, Tech detected signals indicating widespread smog and deforestation in certain areas, while Echo expressed concerns that the Empire likely had established outposts on the planet. After landing the Marauder in a small clearing within the dense forest, the squad ventured into the wilderness to locate a Wookiee village, guided by Gungi. Gungi claimed to have vague recollections of his home village from his dreams.

Following a brief encounter with a group of native netcasters, the squad arrived at the remnants of Gungi's village, which had been completely destroyed. After a moment of mourning, the squad continued their journey and soon encountered two modified Armored Assault Tanks engaged in burning down a group of Wookiee standing stones, accompanied by a contingent of Trandoshan mercenaries and a captured Wookiee warrior. Enraged, Gungi activated his lightsaber and charged at the convoy, followed by the members of Clone Force 99. In a swift battle, the group disabled the tanks, eliminated their crews, and quickly freed the captured Wookiee warrior. Wookiee reinforcements soon arrived and escorted the squad back to their village.

Shortly after, Babwa Venomor, the Trandoshan in charge of the Kashyyyk deforestation operation, arrived at the site of the skirmish with additional Trandoshan mercenaries and a detachment of clone stormtroopers. As the convoy inspected the scene, one of the clones noticed lightsaber marks on the destroyed tanks. Another clone suggested reporting their findings to Imperial command, but Venomor dismissed the idea, claiming that he and his mercenaries would eliminate the Jedi themselves.

Final Conflict

At the Wookiee village, Wookiee chief Yanna received information from her scouts that the convoy was heading towards the village. Refusing to abandon the Wookiees, Clone Force 99 agreed to stay and assist in defending against the convoy. The renegade clones and Wookiees devised a plan to lure the convoy deep into the forest before unleashing a swarm of netcasters upon them.

As the convoy approached the village, the Wookiees initiated their attack by destroying a tank with a thermal detonator, triggering an intense firefight. Both sides suffered casualties during the battle, before the Wookiee forces initiated a coordinated retreat deeper into the forest. Having identified Gungi, Veremor personally pursued the Wookiee, wielding a flamethrower. As his forces were attacked and overwhelmed by a horde of netcasters, Veremor attempted to eliminate Gungi, but was ultimately captured and hoisted into the forest canopy by three netcasters.

Conclusion

With the convoy destroyed and the Imperial forces either killed or routed, the Wookiees extinguished the fires that had ignited during the battle. Back at the village, the Wookiee warriors celebrated with the members of Clone Force 99, while Gungi and Omega offered prayers beneath a wroshyr tree. While Yanna expressed her belief that Gungi and Omega would eventually find new paths in life, Hunter hoped that those paths would lead them far away from war.
